[Dragon Quest XI S] Just a random observation, but what's with the too-long belts that are then tied in a knot on so many of the male characters? And not just on the default outfits for PCs, but everywhere?
Tanks4theCandy
Like, is that just the style in Erdrea, was it just a bored character artist looking to save time, or was it done on purpose for some reason?
Tanks4theCandy
IDK why I'm noticing it so much on this play through, but now I can't un-notice it. X3
Pen Again
you'd think in a world that probably has someone who makes garments or works leather or something in every village/town, they could trim their belts to size
Pen Again
or at least, idk, use an awl or ice pick and poke another hole in it so it'll fit
Tanks4theCandy
That's the thing; the belts are buckled fine, there's just so much extra belt that it's tied in a knot around the rest of the belt to keep it from flopping around weirdly.

A-L-EX-ANDER
I've seen that in a lot of games.
A-L-EX-ANDER
I'm guessing in-universe it's so that leatherworkers can make a 'standard' size belt and not have to worry about adjusting to fit different waists.
A-L-EX-ANDER
One size fits all, just loop the extra if you don't need it.
Tanks4theCandy
I guess that could be it. It's just such an odd choice, appearance-wise and not even in an over-the -top video game/anime way. X3
A-L-EX-ANDER
https://imgs.plurk.com/QzQ/udS/l5pGFQfkJL8MgC72UrNmSGUI4vT_lg.jpg apparently it's a thing in real life too
Pen Again
that's a different kind of belt tho, I think
Tanks4theCandy
Huh... :|a
Pen Again
at first I thought it was like https://images.plurk.com/6qIknyQZ3RJBVPv37DXImi.png but now I really just think the part the belt's hooked through is another metal look like they have by the potion
Tanks4theCandy
Yeah it is a different kind of belt; it looks like that one's designed to be 'fastened' that way. So I guess it's more like combining that sort of belt and a regular belt.
Pen Again
And I mean I have done what the DQ people do before when the belt won't reach another pantloop, though it's less knot and more fold
Pen Again
with that in mind, tunic lad Eleven there doens't have pant beltloops so the alternative is to let the excess just flop in the way
Pen Again
which, considering belt leather is usually kind of stiff, would be very in the way for a swordsman
Pen Again
so I guess if they're not going to resize their belts, that's how you'd keep it from flopping around
A-L-EX-ANDER
Yeah.
Rindude
Belts were super long in the medievil ages too

Rindude
Some of it was, yes just to look cool
Pen Again
people have always been trying to look cool tbh
Rindude
though they usually didn't go past the crotch
Rindude
that was teh wrong image my bad

Tanks4theCandy
Huh... Interesting.
Rindude
Eleven actually is about right then
Tanks4theCandy
IDK, my brain just keeps going 'one little extra loop of leather around the belt to slide it through would look so much neater' but that may just be me. X3
Rindude
The other thing to remember is that Belt loops
Rindude
are only a century old
Rindude
or well the way we have belt loops are only a century old
Tanks4theCandy
I did not know that. :|a
Tanks4theCandy
This plurk of random wondering has proven surprisingly educational! :3
Usagi
yeah i suspect it's a deliberate deal combining modern buckles with olden belt lengths
particularly since it looks to me that the purpose of such a knot at the end, after the belt is buckled, would be twofold; it would be an extra stopper on the belt, but it would Also shorten the excess length
Tanks4theCandy
/nods
Rindude
yup
Rindude
And another point to that is that it doesn't have a keeper loop which is kinda modern too
Tanks4theCandy
Ah, that's what it's called! And yeah, that's probably why it looked so odd to me. I kept thinking that just one little loop would make things so much neater-looking.
bunnymoon
I feel like I've seen modern belts done up that way for ~fashion~ reasons too
Tanks4theCandy
Yeah, I can see it being a fashion thing. Weirder things have been done for that reason. X3
Tanks4theCandy
It was just the fact that I kept seeing it everywhere in this particular setting that made me go 'hmm...'.
bunnymoon
It's probably a short hand for "old times"
bunnymoon
Old timey
Tanks4theCandy
Most likely; that's just a lot more obvious now that I've had my lesson in Ye Olde Belts. X3
