StarryNight
MIP A new Generation SPOILERS
StarryNight
I love the 4th wall there
StarryNight
geez how many generations is this after Princess Twilight's rule?
StarryNight
curious because it makes you wonder how long peace lasts
StarryNight
and why unicorns shoot lasers and eat Earth ponies
papermint tiger
......MLP got dark
StarryNight
its basically this one Earth pony who doesnt like unicorns and pegsuss got a postion of power and is influencing others with fear
тωιsтε∂ sтεεℓ
I watched this the other night. it left me with so many questions.
StarryNight
I think its a fair reflection of how Gen Z sees the world to Gen Ys viewpoint
StarryNight
trust is harder than it was for us growing up
StarryNight
the world changed a lot after 9/11
StarryNight
Im listening to a book about Gen Z on Amazon by this behavioral therapist and how Gen Z does have a harder time trusting
StarryNight
so her dad was Gen Y; the one who came from Twilight Sparkle's utopia world where every pony could be friends
StarryNight
not all Gen Z are not trusting but the majority arent
StarryNight
analoren TL;DR this is a representation of reality
Exacerangutan
yeah, not having that pre-9/11 context would probably make it harder to resist the tone of things today
Exacerangutan
the way things are when you're little tends to feel like How Things Have Always Been and/or The Natural State Of The World
StarryNight
on-top of how instant our news is ^
Exacerangutan
so millennials at least have an acute sense of "what the hell is happening, it's not supposed to be this way" where Gen Z grew up with it already being like that so it's just... how things are
StarryNight
Yuuup
StarryNight
they came into a world that doesn't feel safe >:
StarryNight
and cant understand Gen Y's childhood of playing with the kids on the block even if you didnt go to school with them
StarryNight
Gen Z has a default of stranger is danger
Exacerangutan
yeah I guess kids just... running around the neighborhood isn't a thing anymore, or something...??
Exacerangutan
which is kind of mindboggling
StarryNight
nod nod
StarryNight
its not just 9/11; theres also social media factor into this and other things
StarryNight
but she tends to focus on 9/11 as the changing point
StarryNight
anyways; this is what this MLP movie seems to be about
Exacerangutan
yeah, I mean it was definitely a major inflection point, and I suspect it influenced a lot of the other cultural shifts
StarryNight
with Sunny being a-strange Gen Z-er who believes her Gen Y father that once upon a time; every pony could be friends
StarryNight
and the rest of the town is all - pegsus and unicorns are evil and will eat you >:<
Exacerangutan
...hrm. Without seeing it myself, I'm honestly not sure if that's pointing to the Inherently Scary Gen Z World, or to the misinformation and fear-generation tactics of fascism.
Exacerangutan
...which aren't unrelated things, obviously, but
Exacerangutan
we millennials also grew up in a time when "Nazi" was 99% metaphorical and it definitely isn't anymore
StarryNight
Does anyone else want to point out how deep this got with talking about colorful ponies?
Exacerangutan
XD
StarryNight
^^
StarryNight
there is for sure fascism in this with the one Earth pony who is running the company and Creating the fear of anyone different
StarryNight
Also if you want to look into the book, Paul
StarryNight
wow theres an entire fascism song
StarryNight
Angry, angry mob!!!
OwlsNotAsThySem
I think it depends on the community: in my New England hybrid small town/suburban town, there's still the odd packs of kids roving the neighborhood on bikes like they did in the Eighties.
OwlsNotAsThySem
Like, that culture may have faded post-9/11, but I think Pokemon GO and Stranger Things helped bring it back.
StarryNight
theres always going to be location differences i.e. small town vs big city
StarryNight
and some parts of the world are still friendly
OwlsNotAsThySem
I live near an old cemetery and we've had a shifting number of groups of pre-teens/young teens hanging around it trying to catch ghost Pokemon.
OwlsNotAsThySem
Yeah, there's always regional variants.
Exacerangutan
...I'm dimly aware of "Generation Me" as a thing but I always got more of a "let me tell you my feelings about what's wrong with the youth today" vibe than a useful insight vibe.
Exacerangutan
like... the book cover itself is a pretty disparaging starting place, especially given that the author presumably is fairly proud of its "cleverness," and I'm skeptical of how actually-revised it is from its 2006 since the only change to the cover is adding a slightly-less revealing shirt, a belt, and a fancier tattoo.
Exacerangutan
...but she sets of several of my menagerie of pet peeves, so I'll stop soapboxing XD
