I know that books follow a very clear, linear path, but there are times when they somehow feel a bit railroady

I'm reading a book called Dreadnought (Trans super hero) and so far the main character has not done anything on her own free will

she just sort of pinwheels in whatever direction the plot takes her

maybe that's the point tho

I'm only at the start and she's written to be a bit of a doormat

that's not books, that's bad writing

i tend to find that pretty intolerable, and only a really good plot/characters can keep me reading
