The American 50s housewife was propaganda made to get women to give up the jobs they had excelled at during the war. Getting women to give up salaries, which in turn meant having control over their own lives, to marry PTSD-riddled war heroes and have babies, and give up on the freedom they were enjoying turned out to be harder than they had predicted.
