... How have I never heard of this movie before now?

Oh my gosh, I loved that book series as a kid.

I never knew anyone tried to animate it

I don't think that fight went exactly like that in the book, though

okay I know I've seen this movie but apparently I do not remember it at all

(Though looking it up, it's also probably because they used a different protagonist for the movie.)

I mean, the book is called The Dragon and the George, and it's very, very different. But I think the protagonist is the same.

The antagonist is definitely different.

Both seem to be playing around with the interesting idea of scientific ideas interacting with magical precepts, but while the animated movie seems to see them as fundamentally incompatible and opposed forces

in the book, he uses his scientific knowledge to vastly enhance his magical ability

The two systems of thought are highly compatible.

Carolinus is also way meaner and more philosophical. He keeps trying to explain to the protagonist that believing something to be true is the same as it being true, in magic, and while energy isn't unlimited it's mostly about how dead sure certain you are that something is real that matters, not your like

mana pool

And since he's extremely dead certain about the laws of physics and how atomic bonds work and other scientific precepts, the guy is surprisingly powerful despite that he has a rank beginner's power level.
