I hereby submit that Alan's Gridsuit wouldn't look like a meditation robe or whatnot. That's Flynn's zen place. Alan "barely restrains himself from punching the elevator to make it open faster" Bradley would show up in something like this.

'82!Alan is 6' of hypervigilance and stress knots and I keep headcanoning he flees to a mountain cabin for long weekends to chop wood or shingle the roof or whatever other skill lets him move around and do things with his hands.

(In my brain, this ties in with Boxleitner having only done Westerns and such before TRON, and how hard it reportedly was for him to get the whole concept of computers in the first place, though he eventually did get it and had fun with the arcade games. Also related are a couple of the articles in Roy's basement, which I'll try to dig up.)

(as usual this is a headcanon, we have no canon information on this and any other headcanon is also valid, I'm just giggling at the mental image )

Also, he grew up before computers and also strikes me as someone who wants things to be predictable and make sense in the same ways they did before, and that's the kind of thing middle-class fathers were doing with their sons back in the 60s, flexing their comfortable economic situation by getting away from city life.

He would have wanted to do the same with Jet and Sam, passing down the things that were father-son moments for him.

By then, though, he had probably mellowed out enough to add some less archaic activities to the list.

I don't know how well my idea would really work, given how much variety there probably can be in regular program gridsuits/appearance, but now I'm cracking up at the idea of Tron being visibly confused by Alan's suit and Alan going, "Oh hell. Oh no. I have never taken my computer son fishing. This must be rectified immediately."

(He did! And he can learn that it's okay to take time for leisure activities that aren't about training for the next fight! I feel like he's had a lot of difficulty learning to have a sense of self that isn't all security monitor all the time.)
