got through most of the stuff older than two days, dinner's almost ready then back to it

Highway St☆r GREAT QUESTION in canon it's kind of an absolutely blanking out, although characters that are freed from it do realize either "did I just lose time??" or the protagonist explicitly "I said yes?? I didn't mean to" but I think that's kind of unfair/uninteresting for an RP setting to have no thoughts head empty for x amount of time so it's tweaked.

Also he can definitely be aware in that little chunk of time between the eye contact and the magic locking since canon establishes it can be fought but Jamil says it's useless to struggle against (and, well, he may be lying but we don't know)

Basically, WITHIN Snake Whisper you can decide entirely if it's more "I am aware of everything I'm doing and hate it" or "oh yeah I absolutely wanna obey Jamil" or some fuzzy in-between! Hopefully that makes sense.
