Astrophysicist Explains Gravity in 5 Levels of Diffi...
Child: gravity attracts things toward other things
PhD: gravity is a scam created by quantum reality to sell more relative dimensions in spacetime
Hooded Figure
Hooded Figure
...it actually sounds pretty neat to lump gravity in with space and time as a gradient of particle states to which we subjectively assign meaning; would that be the same with electromagnetism? can we think of each of them as a spectrum rather than a force or continuum?
Hooded Figure
omu flatland was true all along
Hooded Figure
XD
Exacerangutan
basically, or at least that's the current best-guess quantum field theory description
Exacerangutan
but it's worth bearing in mind that even models as abstract as quantum field theories are still highly subjective and made-up cartoons based on metaphors-built-upon-metaphors to extend outward from the things our brains are built to be good at processing and our empirical experiences actually contain
Exacerangutan
QFT would essentially argue that all the so-called "contiuum forces" are really excitation gradients in the quantum fields of the associated force-mediating bosons, and all the so-called "particles" are really localized excitations in the quantum fields of those bosons and the elemental fermions
Exacerangutan
...but the representation in QFT of gravitons is partly a function of how QFT is constructed to see the world.
Exacerangutan
QFT also supports the representation of solid state lattice vibrations as excitations of the "phonon" field, and lets you use quantum mechanics' mathematical structures to represent scattering events between those phonons and other particles (e.g. you use phonon-electron scattering to explain how resistivity changes with temperature)
Exacerangutan
...but that doesn't mean phonons are fundamental particles, just that you can describe lots of things with a QFT framework
Exacerangutan
lmk if any of that did/didn't make sense
Exacerangutan
I appreciate the "is English real or is French real?" metaphor for that, now that I've watched the video XD
yarn witch
quantum reality being this evil thing that wants more is giving me such serotonin rn and idk why
Exacerangutan
XD
Hooded Figure
Exacerangutan all of this makes sense, granting I'll have to look up what bosuns do and how to define phonons (solid state lattice = atomic structure of solids where the atoms can get excited and fall out of formation under the right stimulus? or something else?)
Hooded Figure
and since it's all fundamentally math it's a given that any language metaphor will be less precise.
Hooded Figure
But yeah, also this is where K's't'lk comes in and bites all of us to prove we're definitely also real.
Exacerangutan
well, the math is really kind of metaphors also, is the thing
Hooded Figure
Exacerangutan
and yeah basically, if you think of the simplest picture of solids as being crystals, there's a fairly simple lattice structure that just repeats over and over
Hooded Figure
This reminds me strongly of the "hole in the middle of math" being that it can't be self-referential and non-self-referential at the same time
Hooded Figure
and yup, I wasn't sure if you were talking about smaller particles or atoms there
Exacerangutan
and you can represent all motion of atoms within that lattice (i.e. vibrations including thermal energy and sound waves) as phonons, via the wave-partial duality of quantum mechanics
Hooded Figure
oh
OH
"phon"=sound!
Exacerangutan
strictly speaking you can do that with any wave but it's not always very useful XD
Hooded Figure
Got it!
Exacerangutan
yup!
Hooded Figure
more music for the very tiny not-always-spheres to make :-D
Exacerangutan
the -on ending in names of particles is basically a Greek marker for some thing or other that has some previously-mentioned properties XD
Hooded Figure
/nodnod! ^^
Exacerangutan
so electrons are electra-on = amber-thingies
Exacerangutan
bosons are Bose-ons = thingies that obey Bose-Einstein statistics
Hooded Figure
Meanwhile I'm also cackling at how the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle is a hard limit in computing because if you're working with a single electron you're not allowed to know where it is or the computer crashes XDDD
Exacerangutan
basically!
Hooded Figure
You can know its speed OR where it is, but not both
Hooded Figure
(at least that's what I remember from college)
Exacerangutan
or, moreover, if you know it's moving then that sets a lower boundary on how precisely you can know know where it is
Hooded Figure
:-D
Hooded Figure
So now I have to look up Bose-Einstein statistics but I definitely can't handle those at the moment (there are a bunch of rl things to do here)
Exacerangutan
I can try and explain more about that but you're welcome to do some reading first XD
Hooded Figure
but fun worldbuilding things that occur to me offhand from all this are that the Trousers of Time work by collapsing the wavefront, the entire universe being one particle defined by and defining every potential thing that could happen to or because of it, the ever-popular simulation theory
Hooded Figure
and whether black holes are actually saving reality by leaking information and preventing All Of It from accruing at one place, that visual of matter that passes an event horizon no longer existing but ALSO falling forever, information as an arrangement of matter rather than a description of it,
Hooded Figure
increasing informational load capacity by loading more layers of information into carefully-built epigrams and cryptic verses (~words can be powerful, powerful words!~), communication via gravity waves, and how we are the universe thinking about itself.
Hooded Figure
And yes, I'd like to read up on it first, but will come back and ping you when I do. :-D
Hooded Figure
yarn witch (lmao)
People: mmm yes capitalism
Me: that's what quantum reality WANTS you to think
yarn witch
(LOL)

quantum fields as a superposition of Great Old Ones
Hooded Figure
isn't the beauty of quantum theory that the Old Ones can't be ruled out?
Hooded Figure
can't live with 'em, can't have a state without them that can't be added to a state with them!
𝕙𝕒𝕦𝕟𝕥𝕖𝕕 𝕡𝕠𝕔𝕜𝕖𝕥𝕤

𝕙𝕒𝕦𝕟𝕥𝕖𝕕 𝕡𝕠𝕔𝕜𝕖𝕥𝕤 the appropriate response would be FTAGN, yes?
𝕙𝕒𝕦𝕟𝕥𝕖𝕕 𝕡𝕠𝕔𝕜𝕖𝕥𝕤
I am PRETTY SURE; I'm not The Biggest Lovecraft Nerd I just like the ~otherworldly~ kind of creep specifically
𝕙𝕒𝕦𝕟𝕥𝕖𝕕 𝕡𝕠𝕔𝕜𝕖𝕥𝕤
(also don't go digging alone in there apparently Le Source is super racist BUT! The good news is it's like Witchworld or DnD, in that it's a Shared World where plenty of authors who are NOT, TRASH, have made great stuff out of it!)
𝕙𝕒𝕦𝕟𝕥𝕖𝕕 𝕡𝕠𝕔𝕜𝕖𝕥𝕤
coming up with examples would Take Effort; I really enjoyed the Call of Cthulu videogame recentishly
𝕙𝕒𝕦𝕟𝕥𝕖𝕕 𝕡𝕠𝕔𝕜𝕖𝕥𝕤
the ending was wet paper but there were some Good Scares in it that weren't BLAAGH MONSTER JUMP
𝕙𝕒𝕦𝕟𝕥𝕖𝕕 𝕡𝕠𝕔𝕜𝕖𝕥𝕤
(if you like the tiny small gut-sinking-when-you-put-it-together aspect, there's more of that)
𝕙𝕒𝕦𝕟𝕥𝕖𝕕 𝕡𝕠𝕔𝕜𝕖𝕥𝕤
The moment I compare it to is Connor in the kitchen, looking around for the murder weapon and coming across a bat
𝕙𝕒𝕦𝕟𝕥𝕖𝕕 𝕡𝕠𝕔𝕜𝕖𝕥𝕤
The bat was dented
𝕙𝕒𝕦𝕟𝕥𝕖𝕕 𝕡𝕠𝕔𝕜𝕖𝕥𝕤
(EVERYONE DISLIKED THAT) there's, a couple of those moments
𝕙𝕒𝕦𝕟𝕥𝕖𝕕 𝕡𝕠𝕔𝕜𝕖𝕥𝕤
AND screamy jumpstuff.
Hooded Figure
Le Source is vastly racist because Le Writer was a vastly horrible person, yeah >.< but thankfully the good news is also true!
Hooded Figure
he was, like, SO viscerally, pathetically terrified of and horrified by the existence of any human the slightest bit different from him
Hooded Figure
and their strange ways that would devour sanity and rain cataclysm on all things
Hooded Figure
which is, why I haven't done a deep read of all that, after getting tired of realizing most of it was just "my poor tiny mind is too feeble and helpless to survive the slightest change of worldview"
Hooded Figure
"my horror and disgust is definitely objective, let me tell you all about it"
Hooded Figure
and I'm happy the canon got away from him
Hooded Figure
I hear Lovecraft County handled things very well

Hooded Figure
dear superhero writers: animals that use electricity to map their surroundings, communicate complex ideas, and commit murder already exist, give your metahumans electrocytes

Cold mirages are the reverse of heat mirages because hot air goes up and cold air goes down!
Hooded Figure
They look like land instead of water and are called hafgerdingars (Icelandic, 'sea hedges'). An important point, though, is that haferdingers show land that actually does exist, albeit much further over the horizon than it appears, while the 'water' in heat mirages is a reflection of the sky.
