[Work & China]: New gov't policy that bans core classes from being learned on the weekend. And some other stuff against children learning before primary school. This is good and bad.

There's a lot to be said about how little these kids get to be kids since they are shoved into schooling as soon as they are 2 years old
Alexceptional
And just. Live at school. 7 days a week. Call it a training center. It's school. We give homework. It sucks
Alexceptional
We call it "tutorial" not homework, but it's homework
Alexceptional
But cutting out one of the largest, most profitable products that we have...
Alexceptional
So a lot of people are losing their jobs and HQ is a cloud of depression right now and everyone is very on edge
Alexceptional
So on the one hand, thank goodness the gov't stepped in to stop parents going HAM on their kids schooling. But also, the company I am in isn't the only one that's going to struggle to find their feet again
papermint tiger
I'm glad to hear that about the kids, not so much the workplace environment
Alexceptional
I don't know where online schooling falls on all of this
Alexceptional
Ya, this is a mixed bag
Alexceptional
At the moment, we've been told that the product for pre-primary school kids is wrapping up at the end of August
Alexceptional
We're finishing current contracts and not issuing them anymore
Alexceptional
But the bulk of online is primary school and middle school
Alexceptional
Like 60,000 classes a week are primary school, 2,000 are pre-primary, 10,000 are middle school
Alexceptional
So we are REALLY unaffected
Alexceptional
It's mainly the marketing, branding and some of the tech support team that's going
Alexceptional
The ones that specialized in the products for the youngest kids
Alexceptional
They're holding a farewell party of sorts. But it's not a great situation. Like, I want to be mad at the company. But I also know money is going to be ??? until they figure out a replacement product
Alexceptional
And there WILL be a replacement product. Maybe we can't "Teach English" but we can do an extracurricular sport or creative class that still happens to be "Taught in English"
Alexceptional
Which. Part of me is like, that could get ugly. But the other part is like Finally, a push for applied language learning
Alexceptional
So I'm kinda all for it? The kids would really benefit from it, more than "It's a banana"
Alexceptional
And they get to be more like kids and less like robots if they have glue and sparkles or a ball to kick or both at the same time.
Alexceptional
My brain is imagining a relay race where you kick a ball and have to glue something to a wall and then kick the ball back
Alexceptional
My brain only thinks in weird kids' games
Alexceptional
I am programmed
