[dp/work stuff/dystopia] Hey quick question asking for a friend. Does the Snowpiercer movie end in "bright eyed optimism" in your opinion?
crisp lasagna
lol no
vampiricist
Follow up: does Fury Road end with all the War Boys automatically accepting Furiosa as their leader or did I miss like a half hour at the end of the film
bladeosaurus
idk abt the TV show but the Snowpiercer film, lol no.
crisp lasagna
Fury Road DOES end with the Wives and Furiosa being accepted back, and the War Boys accepting them in, because 1) they have Joe's corpse and 2) the grounds folk are swarming the lift
crisp lasagna
(a couple of the smaller Pups are actually the ones that take control of getting the lift down and opening the water in the end scene)
violentsound
the film? oh no.
vampiricist
Okay so there are some implications there
vampiricist
I can accept that more than there being
vampiricist
Wide eyed optimism
vampiricist
At the end of the Snowpiercer movie

........wide eyed optimism... snowpiercer...... mmmmm i would say that's a no
vampiricist
Just checking to see if I super misread the ending and this scholar is somehow magically right
vampiricist
The generic narrative device that calls for dystopic films’ bright-eyed
optimism is embraced by Snowpiercer to hyperbolic proportions

is this a (white) man? This sounds like something a (white) man would say
vampiricist
Right? I'm just like

After some google fu, it does seem to be a white dude

Are what he teaches
crisp lasagna
like...I guess it's bright-eyed optimism that Yona and the boy don't instantly die?????
vampiricist
Yeah like they're not eaten by the polar bear so sure. Bright eyed opitimism
ȡ𝓲𝘴ą𝘴𝓽є𝓻
there's a hint that they might be able to survive because you see the bear? but i wouldn't call it an optimistic ending.
crisp lasagna
not even that they don't get eaten, like, they don't step off the train and instantly freeze to death, congrats, it's BRIGHT-EYED!!!!
vampiricist
With their ugg boots and fur coats they are MAGICALLY PROTECTED FROM THE ELEMENTS
crisp lasagna
also, idk, like I know the original graphic novel is borne out of Western concepts and influences and thus is inherently imbued with the Western ideas of nihilism vs optimism, but the film...isn't?
(o・_・)ノ
Snowpiercer is about to end with the lady and child being eaten by the polar bear they saw
ᴇᴠɪᴇ
...the...movie?
(o・_・)ノ
The movie is all I've seen of Snowpiercer
ᴇᴠɪᴇ
Sorry, was questioning the toplevel and just
ᴇᴠɪᴇ
baffled. that anyone could see that ending as anything but hella bleak
ᴇᴠɪᴇ
because you're right, they're gonna get eaten.
(o・_・)ノ
RIGHT
(o・_・)ノ
THE POLAR BEAR WILL BE STARVING AND TRY CAN'T OUTRUN IT
(o・_・)ノ
*they can't
vampiricist
Yeah, about the movie
ᴇᴠɪᴇ
I just watched this show called Alone and they had 10 people trying to survive 100 days in the arctic. They weren't in the dead of winter, they were seasoned survivalists. They didn't have to care for a child. And most of them failed the fuck out.
ᴇᴠɪᴇ
Naw man, that's not an optimistic ending at all. :\
vampiricist
There are wrong takes and then there are wrong takes

Unrelated, but this other scholar was listing books that engage well with dystopian theory and studies and two of them are his own books

Scholar: Tom Moylan's Scraps of Untainted Sky and Baccollini and Moylan's Dark Horizons
Me: ... y... you're Tom Moylan

That's like, my academic goal
vampiricist
To quote myself in my own work
Iʟʟᴏɢɪᴄᴀʟ.
there is no ending that could make a movie where the protagonist admits to eating a baby to survive optimistic
vampiricist
I completely agree. I don't think anything could be perceived as optimistic after Curtis gives that speech
saku 🌠
i can hear my sister laughing in my head over the idea of snowpiercer being optimistic
Eldritch
...This is a "Did you even engage with the same piece of media??"-level wrong take.
