I almost turned into Karen this morning. Our new totally understaffed and understocked supermarket had a massive line at 8:30am because the cashier can't scan $10 off coupon. Manager comes over, tries, says it does not work and he needs to call. 10 minutes later, still nothing, only two registers open, monstrous lines.

Is it wrong to assume he should have done manual override and move on? So many pissed customers. Of course I have terrible PMS yet again which does not help but the lack of people everywhere and therefore zero customer service is out of hand.

alenab
I did manage to walk away before losing it, and totally understand why nobody wants to work these jobs. But it is a vicious circle.

teejhead
If I was the manager and couldn't do a manual override I feel like I would have given the customer $10 out of my pocket just to keep things moving. People in the line behind would probably feel bad and I bet the manger could have turned a profit to boot.

alenab
I mean this is a massive chain not mom and pop store. There has to be a way to do this without making people wait almost half hour at the register on Sunday morning, and without making manager pay it out of their own pocket.

alenab
But I may just be expecting too much.

karenj
OMG that's terrible. (Also at first I thought you were referring to me. LOL.)

alenab
lol sorry
karenj
definitely did not refer to you

GeriLiz
That's all insane. You do what you have to do in order to move customers through.

Red_Ruby
''''This, and I've found chains are better at moving people along by doing overrides and finding ways to give credit etc.

juptonrd
red_Ruby that's because small single owner retail outlets likely have less fancy cash registers and no way to override. Ours is special-made for seasonal consignment events and the only way to ring-in a $10 coupon is to enter it as a $10 check.

juptonrd
We don't use coupons, but in a situation like that, I'd start writing $10 on a 1/8th sheet of paper and having cashiers shove it in the drawer, but no one except me could authorize such a thing.

, we've been so furstrated by the things we've run across this week. "The Public" certainly makes it seem the pandemic is over but supply chain issues/lack of staffing is making even the simplest transacton into An Ordeal.

Red_Ruby
Yeah I totally get that it's not easy, I don't blame small places at all for not having as many options. In this instance the big chain didn't need to let things back up this way

alenab
juptonrd
Exactly, traveling for lacrosse we run into it too and even here. This is a major chain, I would be much less shocked and more patient with mom and pop. They flood us with coupons and then cannot handle them in the store.

alenab
But I do think staffing is a big part of the problem, nobody has enough staff and most certainly not trained staff.
