Love hearing about characters excited for spring break when the Japanese school years starts in spring. Love how these Japanese students purchase things with dollar bills and not yen.
It’s almost like these American writers are completely and totally tone deaf to anything outside of their own country and have no motivation to even research basic facts about something outside that!!
What gets me most about it is that the writer seemed to have this shit relatively bailed down in the first chapter and it went to shit in chapter two and three
god i run into this in rp, too, just characters from a different country and culture (not even japanese, i've had other examples) missing like. basic facts of life or history
sit them under the hotlight and ask them to tell you what the difference between ramen and udon is, and say they can't say "the thickness of the noodles"
to be fair, if you were to have never had udon and tried to google that, you would get slapped in the face with about five different responses that tell you about the noodles in some way concerning their thickness
Like, no lie, I watch this cute af Japanese cooking YT channel for inspiration for Ochako to make meals from and the ramen that IS cooked it always the instant stuff lmfao
The only time I had her make ramen was this extra simple tantanmen ramen recipe she found online abd was like FUCK YEAH THIS IS CHEAP AS SHIT IM GONNA MAKE IT.
Also lol.... yet another gripe because now I’m just here to watch this train wreck happen, but addressing someone 1.) with the wrong honorific, 2.) forgetting the honorifics completely in the next chapter and just calling someone Mr/Mrs Last Name :’)
even udon and ramen aren't actually that hard unless you're going out of your way to make special kinds using made-from-scratch restaurant quality bone based stocks, because people in Japan love their instant stock powders/packets and dashi is just fast and easy to make from scratch anyway
hell, Doing Things Easy is such a thing that JOC regularly has to add special versions of instructions for things that use udon noodles because Nami writes the recipes she knows, which means the default recipes that use udon describe the noodle prep as "place your block of frozen pre-cooked noodles in boiling water for the time listed on the package"
people who work in translation go back and forth on it all the time, but it's definitely something you need to like... research. it's not as simple as subbing in subfixes to names in substitution for common english prefixes
an adult character who we know has or who logically would have known him his whole life and is still using something they called him when he was a beeb
at the most, might be able to stretch it to kids from middle school trying to pretend they were on better terms with him than reality because holy shit must impress the cool hero school kids I COULD BEFRIEND FUTURE FAMOUS PEOPLE
OKAY I GOTTA GIVE MORE CONTEXT: basically the story is a “what if” scenario of if Ochako also grew up alongside the boys and they were all childhood friends. That’s what initially grabbed me. But dear god, even as childhood friends, there is no fucking way one of the CHILDREN would call an ADULT by their first name
mm, what's next, jelly-filled donuts?research
