Jason recognizes he is too hot of a mess to be much use to a kid while dealing with his own issues being triggered BUT HE CANNOT LEAVE A POOR KID WHO NEEDS SOMEONE
like at times he grows in ways that are hilariously unhealthy (pretending to forgive bruce when he tells him about roy dying only to actually be planning a come back to gotham the whole time so he can spit in bruce's ass in the biggest FUCK YOU DAD way he can without a bag of heads)
Like on one hand I did like the idea of Catherine being his OG mom because they gave it way more depth and context than "oh she was really his stepmom and we're not going to explain anything about the altered birth certificate or who helped do that or anything else about all of this."
i was always okay with catherine being his step mom but yeah, it was def an asspull they could have explained better even in retrospect and never bothered to
his mom being a rich girl who fell in love with her dealer and gave up all of that wealth to be with him and have a family and It All Went Wrong was a surprisingly more nuanced take on his backstory that I had not expected at the time
(and for all my issues with how they characterise an early robin jason as already being so reckless and brutal, it was nice to see more scene with him and catherine)
but i can still keep that and just say she was a rich girl who fell in love with her dealer and the dealer's ex dumped a kid on him and she was like MINE and ditched her rich family for him
and her BEING a rich girl means she might have had some connections who would do a favor for her even when she's on the outs with her family so that also explains the birth certificate
it's also an interesting parallel. she gave up all her wealth because her family wouldn't accept willis (and jason?) and then jason ends up adopted by the richest guy in gotham
but that kind of tragic air of possibility of all the things catherine could have been when willis described her and yet who she became thanks to toxic relationships and addiction is sad but a far more interesting character
yeah. imagining her as this fearless, headstrong, Fuck You kind of rich girl who gave up everything for love and a kid who wasn't even hers, but also her addictions and toxic lifestyle was a doomed life is like...it's fucked up and sad but i respect that kind of character.
(there are parallels there, too! roger gordon drank himself to death, like. let her talk to jason or selina about that! or steph, who feared that all the time before crystal got better)
(yeah one of my favorite parts of these issues is definitely that jason is way more concerned about disappointing babs and making her regret believing in him than he is about how he thinks bruce will react)
