NASA mission to Venus... 2028? That's not anytime soon. :-(
🌈Chandni🏳️‍🌈
They travelled through time backwards and went already?
DevinVaughn
mmm what?
Amber
ok, do you mean 2081 because I am confused
Tillie
28 I meant.
heylis-elf
2028? That doesn't seem very soon. But in NASA time, that's a short timetable.
Tillie
Yup. Just saw it on the Nasa life stream where they had an Q&A about it.
Tanarian
It will get here faster than you think.
Tillie
:-/
Tillie
Also 6 months is the sweet spot for arriving there after launch.
sjonsvenson
If they start planning at NASA speed now they won't be ready in '28
Tillie
Nasa told the developers to be ready in '28.
Squeak =^..^=
I thought that said sweet spot to arrive after lunch.
DevinVaughn
A new focus on Venus is a good idea because pressure and temperate can be more earth like than mars. Oxygen is only major problem (or falling)
Tillie
Tillie
DevinVaughn : It's ony 900F hot there and raining acid. :-P
Suze
Tillie : So it's where Earth is headed. Eventually.
Tanarian
Suze : Well said.
Tanarian
DevinVaughn : Uh... wut??
DevinVaughn
Tanarian : If we have floating cities on venus, it will be the closest place in the solar system to being on earth
Tillie
T. A. Lowery
Technically, living in a trailer on the moon would be closer.
Squeak =^..^=
Would that not depend on where the moon is in its orbit? (thinking)
dkronfeld
I think it's exceptionally rare for the Moon to be further from Earth than Venus is...
Tillie
(unsure) hope so, would be weird if not
Tillie
(LOL)
Squeak =^..^=
Now, if I had read and understood the DevinVaughn comment correctly in the furst place, I would have to agree with you.
Tanarian
DevinVaughn : Oh, well, IF. "Floating" was not instantly inferrable. However, I'm still pretty sure Mars is far less likely to kill you instantly if there's an environmental breach.
DevinVaughn
I know, I know.. we are programed to think of colonization off world = Mars. But really we should seriously consider Venus
Should We Be Trying to Colonise Venus Instead of Mar...
Tanarian
[insert El Dorado GIF here]
Tanarian
We really don't have a model for non-surface colonization yet, outside of science fiction. That's probably part of why Venus isn't considered more often. (Asimov's alt!Venus had cities floating on seas, IIRC.)
DevinVaughn
Tanarian : surfacism? Here's a wild thought... Venus is Earth's twin but has a runaway greenhouse effect. What if we fixed it? 2 Earths. Boom.
DevinVaughn
There is all this talk of terraforming Mars, but it's a wasted effort because the sun would blow away. The hard fought for air since there is no magnetic shield protecting it. Venus however does.
DevinVaughn
So if we could cool down Venus, we might be able to return it to a more earth like place?
Tanarian
That's such a long-term project I can't even imagine.
Squeak =^..^=
(thinking) Why do we want to?
dkronfeld
It might be good to have another place where people could live if Earth faces an substantial planetary threat. On the other hand, the effort required to alter a planet is likely so enormous that we may be better off expending it to solve the issues we face here, especially since neither of the candidate planets being discussed here are...
dkronfeld
... especially distant from Earth.
