spoiler ramble for A Silent Voice
Quinneapolis
it was a good movie
Quinneapolis
I just wish that, like...
Quinneapolis
there's a really specific emotion that I feel very strongly
Quinneapolis
when I do not feel that a character has earned a redemption
Quinneapolis
and I can feel the movie starting to treat them as redeemed
Quinneapolis
and I hate it
Quinneapolis
the story puts so much weight on the notion of Ishida apologizing to Shoko, characters confront him about it, he does it, it's a big emotional scene
Quinneapolis
meanwhile Ueno bullies Shoko, steals her hearing aids repeatedly and throws them around the room, blames her for their friend group falling apart, confronts her about it and doesn't let her use her notebook, instead insisting that she lip read through the whole rant
Quinneapolis
then physically assaults Shoko immediately following her attempted suicide
Quinneapolis
apologizes to her for literally none of it
Quinneapolis
and the end of the movie has her just chilling slightly awkwardly with the squad who are like "oh she's just a tsundere"
Quinneapolis
she's not a tsundere she's a fucking asshole
Quinneapolis
fuck ueno all my homies hate ueno
Quinneapolis
oh but it's fine because she had her own sort of complex emotional arc going on and she cared (about ishida, not shoko) in her own way
Quinneapolis
you don't get to torment someone for an entire movie and then go "I'm a tsundere now so it's cute" at the end
EsperBot
It's the Sasuke Feeling
Quinneapolis
I most recently felt it in The Mitchells vs The Machines
Gabiluzbad
I thought of Gunnerkrigg Court
Quinneapolis
yes
EsperBot
There are plenty of other places it comes up but for me it's the Sasuke Feeling because the entire back half of that decades-long series is just watching the series roll inevitably towards it in slow motion
Dragomorph
It does sound like there was a lot of things trimmed back in the movie from the manga which might have at least partially explained Ueno's bullshit
Quinneapolis
maybe
Quinneapolis
she just, she never listens to shoko or really tries to understand her on more than an absolute surface level, she never apologizes, she just decides that they're cool now on her own
kamikasei
As I recall my impression was that it seemed very uncomfortably like Shoko was forgiving Ueno for bullying her for being deaf while Ueno was forgiving Shoko for... being deaf, and having needs resulting from that
Quinneapolis
Ueno fucking sicks
Quinneapolis
sucks
kamikasei
Like there was a real strong strain of "well you're different to other people and you need to understand that's inconvenient for them, or just makes you stand out, and therefore of course they'll treat you like shit for it, that's only natural, shikata ga nai"
Quinneapolis
ueno's big endgame conversation with ishida where she's like "I guess I just wasn't able to like shoko"
Quinneapolis
like bruh
Quinneapolis
nobody's asking you to like shoko
Quinneapolis
we're asking you to apologize for physically and emotionally torturing her for months
