Disney is not in the business of making art. They are in the business of making money. But sometimes, they...
Quinneapolis
well, they used to sometimes have to make art to make money
Quinneapolis
but I feel like they've found a way to circumvent that in the 2020s
Rama
They made stuff that was just enough like art to addict at least two generations to their Brand
Rama
And now they just produce more Brand without producing art
Beans
the closest they've come to making art was Fantasia
Quinneapolis
they used to make a lot of art (in order to make money)
Quinneapolis
now they've found an algorithm that they can feed IPs into and it tells them what to milk this month to maximize profits and extend copyrights optimally
Beans
but funnily enough (in a very sad way) Both times Disney has made a Fantasia, they've been box office failures
Beans
sad but true
Quinneapolis
I'd get more into cruella memes if what the movie represents wasn't so bleak
Quinneapolis
the funny thing is I can pinpoint the specific moment I fully turned on Disney
Quinneapolis
and it's not even from a movie i saw
Quinneapolis
it's from the second trailer for Ralph Breaks the Internet
Quinneapolis
WRECK IT RALPH 2 Trailer 2 (2018)
right here. this clip.
Quinneapolis
1m18s.
Quinneapolis
that's when I became enemies with the Walt Disney Corporation
Beans
valid
Quinneapolis
they didn't just shoehorn a blatant commercial for their other brands into their movie
Quinneapolis
but they insisted on wedging that commercial into the commercial for the movie
Niamh Vibes
I remember really thinking, in 2005, while playing KH: “I wish these Disney characters interacted at all”
Niamh Vibes
And that trailer broke that
Quinneapolis
also the long
Quinneapolis
slow, loving pans past google and amazon logos
Quinneapolis
that trailer is in no way less shameless than the Emoji Movie
Quinneapolis
the purpose of it is to appease other corporations who are giving them money and to increase awareness that the star wars IP belongs to them while also increasing traffic to the oh my disney website
Quinneapolis
and also, I guess, to pitch a movie sequel
Beans
WIR2 was easily their weakest movie of the decade because it exists as a living advertisement by people who don't really know the internet
Quinneapolis
while also demonstrating that the people making it do not understand any part of why people liked wir1
Quinneapolis
I bet it turned a profit though!!!
Beans
it says a lot that the princess bits are the only bits anyone still talks about
Beans
and even those were cut down because of disney's all-constricting rules it imposes on itself
Beans
ehhh [vague hand wobble] 500 million. Not bad, but not the biggest hit either
Dragons Dragons
I really liked the core of WIR2's story being what happens when your happily-ever-after is your friend's stuck-in-a-rut. That's a story that never gets told in the way that it did here where both sides are understandable, even if it does conclude that it's wrong to try and hold them back.
Dragons Dragons
But that's not what anybody remembers, because it was drowned out by flashy lights and product placement.
Rama
I mainly remember it for contradicting every piece of important setting lore in the first movie and almost rendering the conflict in it moot retroactively
Rama
But also, the product placement
Snowdrops ミ☆
I remember it for product placement and contradictions and also trying to be funny with the "I want" song but there just wasn't any good will left by then to make it enjoyable in the slightest
Rama
Like there's a good story for a Disney sequel buried in there somewhere but it's barely visible under the Everything Else
Quinneapolis
interesting how I decided that, for me, Star Wars / The MCU / Kingdom Hearts are over now, all at around the same time
pastel ranma
Yeah same here. At the very least they've gone to "I'm probably fine with learning about them secondhand unless a lot of people whose opinions I trust say they're good actually" levels at the same time.
Quinneapolis
after Endgame, Episode 9, and KH3, it was like, great! they Ended
Quinneapolis
I no longer have to be around for the inevitable more content
oh i'm scary
I kept thinking like
oh i'm scary
"I'll keep watching some MCU stuff"
oh i'm scary
but
oh i'm scary
so far this has not transpired
Quinneapolis
to be fair covid kind of happened to the MCU
oh i'm scary
yeah
Quinneapolis
what has there even been other than far from home and some tv shows
oh i'm scary
but like I was for sure gonna watch Falcon and Winter Soldier
oh i'm scary
and then
oh i'm scary
I for sure didn't
oh i'm scary
and like
oh i'm scary
I kind of don't wanna see Black Panther 2 without Chadwick Boseman
Quinneapolis
really even beyond the MCU I've just kind of lke
oh i'm scary
and I can like
Quinneapolis
I'm trying to minimize Comic Book Style Super Heroes from my life
Quinneapolis
after the past decade or two
Quinneapolis
it's been enough
Quinneapolis
give me a different kind of stories
oh i'm scary
feel that Disney cynicism radiating off of Captain Marvel 2 and Thor 4 from here
oh i'm scary
they're going to do things that on paper I should like
oh i'm scary
and the handling of those things is going to be absolutely soulless
A Grinning DM
I will say that while Disney is no longer in the business of art, there are still artists that work for Disney and sometimes, despite Disney’s best attempts to sabotage them, they will create really fantastic art under the Disney brand
