it's such an interesting intermingling of zombie thriller but also, like, imperial succession drama & politicking & how the strong grind commoners underfoot
i also find it super interesting that it's based on an actual historical plague that swept korea (just make it zombies), but that is uh... maybe more close2home in this day and age
When I'm a bit skittish about something but still interested, I tend to deliberately spoil myself and/or just listen to it on low without looking directly at the screen, to gauge where jumpscares or moments of tension fall.
like i found myself saying to my friend a lot, "Kingdom is actually way more what i wanted to see out of Game of Thrones, re: how medieval politics collides with a supernatural threat"
GoT felt like.... basically a slasher/torture porn horror with some fantasy set dressing, like. Coming from a horror fan perspective the fact that they were doing Sexy Things and regularly killing members of the ensemble cast didn't feel original or shocking, just tiresome because they didn't have enough other material to hold my interest.
yeahhhh and the white walkers just... aren't all that connected to the rest of the series plot bc they're so far removed from everything? for most of the series they're just beyond the wall, most characters don't even know they exist
but here you get to see a kingdom facing the "oh my god what the FUCK do we do with our zombie problem???" question so much earlier, so the plotlines are far more entwined in Kingdom
i also find it super interesting that it's based on an actual historical plague that swept korea (just make it zombies), but that is uh... maybe more close2home in this day and age
it deserves more love for sure, the characters are v likeable
