Gut check question: If I run a survey asking about someone's gender identity, is it inclusive enough to make the options Male/Female/Non-Binary or Other?
"Other" is mainly problematic when the only other options are male and female and no means of explaining is available. One sticking point with using "trans" as a category unto itself is that it implies that being trans isn't being male or female, when that's often exactly what someone might be — they're just not the one assigned to them at birth.
That is to say... it's problematic to imply that a trans man has to choose between "male" or "trans." The problem could be solved by using "cis male" and "cis female" instead of just "male" and "female," but of course that depends on the goals of the survey.
