He will absolutely try, but there's always going to be that situation that comes up where there's a choice between self sacrifice and the good of a group (nation, people, etc) and they will always choose the group.

It's based on his parents' relationship, both what they had and what they didn't. There was never a doubt that Malcolm and Leandra were exactly where they wanted to be with each other and the life they'd made, even if the world got in the way what with prejudices vs mages

but they also had no security outside of themselves. They were always in danger, and that's something Hawke seeks to have, but what his parents had and kept safe, but also seeking what they couldn't achieve.

Mostly he just sits on that unless its shoved in his face; he's not so insecure to assume that his partners would be pining for lost love or anything like that

but when presented with a relationship he wasn't present for, and having in-jokes and 'you had to be there' laughed about in his presence, he gets a bit squirrly

The fastest way to get him to be completely okay with it though is to have the other party - past lover or whatever - tell him directly they have no intention of rekindling anything or say that the partner is clearly happier with him or... generally stroke Hawke's ego just a bit.
