[the good place-ish] rewatching it has reminded me of a bit from the Screwtape Letters

A book by CS Lewis about a experienced demon writing to a new demon as he's trying to tempt a human to sin

the bit I remember specifically is about Hell being all boring and bureaucratic, with a division in their research department tasked specifically with figuring out the concept of "love"

because God said one time that if they do, then the war between them and heaven would be ended

except they can't understand love

so they can't understand what that meant

so understanding "love" MUST be the key to outmaneuvering the enemy and winning the war by force

on a unrelated note, the research division hasn't made any substantial improvement for a millennia
