I poked at it once before to see if there was still anything connected to my acct cause I had actually purchased it multiple times (PS3 & PC & for a friend) because I was really excited and wanted to do the thing and I had money to burn at that point so.....
but like....... idk so many people like it and I do love me some ffxiv but it was so frustrating and whatnot the first time around I'm sort of terrified to even look at it
original 1.0 version was so bad Yoshi P literally wrote in an apocalypse to destroy the continent so he could rebuild it into something not .... bad...
mostly I remember hours and hours of tech issues, some pretty graphics, having 6145324856153 buttons and no idea what any of them did and people yelling at me the 2 times I tried to do a dungeon
it was soooo bad that it was used as an example of What Not To Do with MMORPGs, and it's been changed so much that it's one of (if not the) best MMO around atm
new players also get a little sprout emoji 🌱 by their name and every person I know of is super nice to sprouts like some unwritten rule that you've gotta be gentle and help them out haha
yeah that old original version was a huge flop and they ended it early and basically made a new completely revamped game where the termination of the old one is part of the big plot
honestly even the first part of the new version is a little slow and hit or miss with some people but it's still waaaaaaaay better and they've even simplified THAT a lot more for people (while giving away a lot more for the free trial)
and you dont have to feel locked into one class, you choose one to begin with but others open up later on and you can practice and get a feel for whatever as you go
and yeah you might not have a Feel for the character really until you get further in when the writing changes and so on but no real rules just have fun
really that stuff is more in your head unless you take the character outside of the game for RP or RP in the game but that's not a necessity for playing
my bard/dancer has samurai leveled really high because OOCly I thought I'd like it (I didn't) and ICly he's from a samurai family so he felt obligated, for example
i went raen bc they're the feudal japanese ones and that's my jam but the xaela (who are mongolian based) are sooooooooooo good. i just finished part of the main story where you finally meet a bunch of tribes and it's been one of my favorite parts of the game so far au ra are the best
I'm debating naming things right now.... his given name is def gonna be Tarkhan ("skillful" but also is the name of nobility in Calormen in the Narnia books) but for tribe I'm like
also I didn't know anything about au ra naming things or anything?? but I'm amused because I actually do know a bit about 15th century Mongolian history since I've been researching so much for Claude
yeah that was me with mine tbh i was already debating a japanese name to match my irl friend who i knew had a similar name to what i wanted and then someone came in and told me "oh yeah they're very old japanese so the most lore compliant names are more traditional than modern ones" and i was just like OH BOY GOOD THING JAPANESE HISTORY IS MY FIELD OF STUDY
like I said, I main it and have since I started playing and for the longest I did not get why everyone else had issues with it since to me it was the most straightforward caster class, since it is pure damage output and nothing else, with a fairly straightforward concept
that said though ul'dah (where thaumaturges start) is probably the best starting city story wise, but gridania (where lancers start) is the prettiest and also quickest
though for what it's worth world matters a little less bc cross world travel is very easy and all the worlds on one data center tend to play together for dungeons and such
