he still hates them to this day

here it depends on where you are - in tourist hotspots seagulls are menaces because some idiots have probably fed them in the past and now they expect that the food in humans' hands is theirs

at one point we visited a seaside tourist town where they had signs up DON'T LET SMALL CHILDREN EAT FOOD BY THEMSELVES
