At the time I thought it was too cynical, but in retrospect...wow, Overwatch 2 didn’t exist even a little until they needed an announcement to distract from the Blitzchung thing, huh.

Like, let’s review the cinematic they dropped with the announcement, which is the only thing they have ever dropped related to Overwatch 2

Does the trailer suggest new game mechanics? No

Does the trailer suggest new characters? No

Does the trailer suggest new environments? No, it’s set in fucking Paris!

Does the trailer suggest any new story elements? Not really! I mean I guess the gang is finally back together but you don’t need a whole new game for that

Hell half the voice lines in the trailer are just. Combat barks from Overwatch 1 lmao

What I’m saying is that this cinematic was an Overwatch 1 thing that was repurposed as an announcement trailer. Probably in a hurry, too, given the combat bark reuse.

I think maybe the idea of an Overwatch 2 had been bandied about casually in the production team but I don’t for a moment believe that a single second or dollar had been spent on so much as preproduction until Blitzchung happened and Blizzard’s reputation was on fire and they needed to drop some kind of announcement to get some good will back.
