Weird foods | So I bought a can of silkworm pupa - Beondegi and trying to figure out how to eat it. (cw: eating insects)

Trying to find a good recipe of what to do with it.
SᏋPH
Yes. I eat a lot of weird things.
SᏋPH
But I'm really excited to try this one. Been thinking of it since I missed my chance when I was on a trip 10 years ago and saw it sold by street vendors.
ʝօʏʄʊʟ
.............what? WHY?
ʝօʏʄʊʟ
you could just add it to your chicken for some crunch?
SᏋPH
I'm weird. And.... I like trying things I've never tried. :-D Saw it available on the Korean supermarket I was ordering from last week and decided to go for it.
SᏋPH
The other thing I missed trying was the barbequed scorpions back then.... same trip. >.> That I'm pretty sure I won't get to find anywhere.
SᏋPH
My mother also thinks I'm nuts. Lol.
SᏋPH
But then SHE's the one who keeps saying that she misses eating water beetles from when she's a kid. SO. I must have gotten it from somewhere. >.>
camille ★
Damn, you are brave as all hell
SᏋPH
YOLO! I don't go adventuring personally. But I'll eat. :-D
camille ★
I'm not brave enough to try that but lemme know how it tastes (thinking)
SᏋPH
But what's hilarious. You know how they sometimes slap stuck on English sticker labels with standardized nutrition values and all over the cans. It says "FISH BAIT" on it. XDDDD
camille ★
I mean...I guess you COULD use it as that
SᏋPH
Not sure fish eats salted worms. Lol.
camille ★
I have no idea about fishing so
SᏋPH
I used to fish as a kid.
ʝօʏʄʊʟ
Fish eat worms, but I've never used salted worms with them. >>
ʝօʏʄʊʟ
and you're weird, but i love you that way. even if you eat strange, strange things!
noneofyours
I know one of my friends also likes to eat stuff like that from a market here and tries to get me to eat it constantly. I believe she has used it as a Panko replacement with chicken
SᏋPH
noneofyours : Wait, what? .... using silkworm pupa to replace breadcrumbs on chicken? O.o
SᏋPH
ʝօʏʄʊʟ : You'll get to hear the tales of my strange adventurous foods when I'm not eating incredibly boring foods.
noneofyours
See, so my friend is weirder than you 😝
noneofyours
I can ask her, I believe she fries the chicken not bakes it
SᏋPH
How would that... even work. O.o Pupa aren't huge, but they're way bigger than panko should be.
SᏋPH
Though, it'll be awesome if it works. :|a Carb free fried chicken. Mmmmm.
Jay
you'd crush them up, I imagine
ʝօʏʄʊʟ
Yes, but the boring food isn't your fault. I know you wouldn't eat that way if it was just you.
SᏋPH
Jay : But.... it's... squishy inside. I think. I have no idea how it really is.But that's how it's described.
Jay
hmmm, no clue then
SᏋPH
ʝօʏʄʊʟ : Nope. But I mean, I get it, it's like... healthy to the degree that it balances all the unhealthy stuff I eat.
Jay
I'd assumed they were roasted/dried so they'd be crunchy
SᏋPH
Maybe? But I think the canned stuff comes in water.
Jay
oh, huh... okay, that's gone from intriguing sounding to gross sounding XD
Jay
(and sounding more like, yeah, bait than food)
SᏋPH
Ingredients say Pupa, salt, water.
SᏋPH
I found a Korean site that says to rinse it out. Then put it in oven to cook like nuts.
DEMON TWINK
Roast them like chickpeas
DEMON TWINK
OR NUTS YES
Jay
aha
Jay
yeah, you could season and roast them to eat as is, or not season them, roast them, then crush them up to use as 'breading'
SᏋPH
DEMON TWINK : Is this from... knowledge? Or a very educated guess?
SᏋPH
Yeah, they say to marinade like 30 mins in a soya sauce mixture, then roast them. I WILL TRY THIS. When I have time.
DEMON TWINK
Just a guess based on what I'd do if I had some lmao
SᏋPH
GOOD SHOT.
DEMON TWINK
DEMON TWINK
I'd try it with a gochujang, sugar, and soy sauce based marinade because I bet they'd taste good roasted with a sweet spicy salty coating
DEMON TWINK
BUT THAT'S ME SPEAKING OUT OF MY ASS I never ate these things before
SᏋPH
.... Funny, that's similar to the instructions I've found online. Soya sauce, Sriracha, sugar, and garlic marinade...
SᏋPH
SᏋPH
/peers hard at
DEMON TWINK
SᏋPH
...... /feels like Marcus trying to figure out Jeff right now
noneofyours
I believe she grinds them in a food processor
SᏋPH
OH. Okay, that makes a whole lot more sense.

The friend I know who eats them does the roast route for the whole group and then yes like people have said, you can either marinate them or grind and use for chicken breading or otherwise, because they become very crispy apparently and have a very satisfying crunch. Her words, not mine
