I can almost understand the conflation of fascism and communism more, seeing how a number of countries have proclaimed themselves to be communist but then ended up being fascist

don't forget that the Nazis were the National Socialist party. Even though all the actual socialists got murdered in the night of long knives, a lot of people still draw that connection

yeah unfortunately because the nazis claimed to be socialists, many on the right do claim that therefor socialists = nazis

because logic is not their strong suit, obviously
