By January 19th, a month after the campaign had begun, the country had given 26% of its 9m people at least one dose. As has happened elsewhere, it started with older people. And for them, some results are now emerging.
In a day-by-day comparison of a group of over-60s who had been vaccinated with a group of otherwise-similar unvaccinated individuals, the rate of positive infections in the vaccinated group had fallen by a third by the 14th day.
Vaccines are the only way out of this. The question is, how quickly can they turn things around?
