Hello Plurk. Who here can teach me how fractions work because I have no idea. I thought I did but I do not. So uh
∂єтє¢тινє вяαт
Help?

hello
bradwick
I can!
Hyatt
lemme see
∂єтє¢тινє вяαт
right now I'm trying to remember how adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing them.
∂єтє¢тινє вяαт
I remember the denominator has to be the same for Adding and subtracting and then you reduce it right?
bradwick
If you need to reduce, yes. For multiplication just multiply numerator times numerator and denominator times denominator.
∂єтє¢тινє вяαт
solving inequalities also doesn't make sense to me, but I'm focused on the fractions for now
bradwick
For division you switch the numerator and denominator of the fraction you’re dividing by and then multiply (invert and multiply).
∂єтє¢тινє вяαт
I thought you had to cross multiply on the multiplication
bradwick
No, straight across.
bradwick
Let’s look at an example.
bradwick
1 as a fraction is 1/1. 1 times 1/2 becomes 1/1 times 1/2. 1 times 1 is 1 (numerators) and 1 times 2 is 2 (denominators). So 1 times 1/2 is.... 1/2.
∂єтє¢тινє вяαт
ohhh okay
bradwick
Another example... 2 as a fraction is 2/1. 2 times 1/2 becomes 2/1 times 1/2. 2 times 1 equals 2 (numerators) and then 1 times 2 equals 2 (denominators). That is 2/2 which is 1/1 or just 1. 2 times 1/2 is... 1!
Hyatt
cross multiplication is for when one numerator or denominator is missing
∂єтє¢тινє вяαт
I think I vaguely remember that?
∂єтє¢тινє вяαт
and I cannot remember how solving equalities works.
Combining Like Terms and Solving Simple Linear Equat...
∂єтє¢тινє вяαт
this kinda thing
∂єтє¢тινє вяαт
why did I think I could take intermediate algebra when I can barely remember the most basic parts of math
∂єтє¢тινє вяαт
I should never have waiting 12 freaking years to go back to school.
Hyatt
get the letters on the same side
Hyatt
for the first problem, add 5h to each side
Hyatt
probably easier to multiply out the parentheses on the left side and simplify it down to h + #
Hyatt
so after multiplying out the left would be 6 - 2h - 6, or just -2h
Hyatt
then add 5h to each side, so you have 5h - 2h = 0
∂єтє¢тινє вяαт
I had the 6- 2h -6 = -5h but I'm getting lost as to how to get the letter on the same side
Hyatt
add numbers with letters to each side the same as you would with the numbers alone. so like how numbers alone can be added and subtracted together, numbers with letters can be added
Hyatt
if you want to get rid of the -2h on the left, add 2h to each side
Hyatt
6 - 2h - 6 + 2h = -5h + 2h
∂єтє¢тινє вяαт
I don't think I get it, still. so you take away the 2h on the left and add it to the end on the right side?
Hyatt
sort of. on the left side, you have -2h
Hyatt
so to get rid of it on the left, you add 2h to both sides
Hyatt
the key is when you add or subtract things to one side, you need to do it to both

Khan Academy is supposed to be good for this.
