[tech stuff] So.
Flash Bastard
I have an Amazon gift card from Christmas (thanks, Megan's parents!) that would cover at least part of the cost of a memory card for the Vita Quinn got me.
Flash Bastard
So I think that's what I want to do with that.
Flash Bastard
aaaaaaaaaand we have the budget this month to REPLACE MY LAPTOP.
Flash Bastard
So I need to think about what all I want in a laptop at this juncture.
Flash Bastard
Mostly I would be using it for writing stuff (hopefully getting back into the freelance stuff, since I'll have reliable computer-that-is-mine) and playing music/youtube stuff.
Flash Bastard
If it can run Steam, then that's a bonus, but really only for P4G.
CJ
CJ
what's your budget
Flash Bastard
And since that's basically the point of the Vita... XD
Flash Bastard
600. We have to buy at Walmart because part of the budget is a Walmart gift card.
Flash Bastard
Optical drives are Good, for the watching of DVDs and perhaps burnination of music.
Flash Bastard
My last laptop was a Toshiba that I got in 2012 and finally started overheating too much to use last summer.
Flash Bastard
(I've been splitting my time between a Chromebook and the roommates' desktop, when Matt doesn't need it for work/being awake on days off, since.)
CJ
first thing that comes to mind is:
Gateway Creator Series 15.6" FHD Performance Noteboo...
Flash Bastard
(We would have to get P4G for the Vita, but we would absolutely. Also P3P as long as it's still on the PSN store.)
CJ
it's a little over your budget and the hard drive is pretty dang small, but it packs a decent amount of power/cost at the inflated hardware prices we're dealing with right now
CJ
CJ
that's it's big brother, which used to be 700 bucks before hardware costs got blown through the roof
CJ
I'll see what i can dig up in the morning. I'm less knowledgeable when it comes to laptops just because I've been building desktops for my personal needs since .... 2013, but i know where to look
Flash Bastard
::nods::
Flash Bastard
I appreciate the assist regardless.
CJ
of course
Flash Bastard
I know my wife is in theory interested in a desktop, but in practice we have nowhere to put one.
CJ
honestly, you can build a pretty darn compact one
CJ
a buddy of mine is a musician who does a lot of international travel, and i built one that can fit in his backpack
CJ
Flash Bastard
I can imagine, especially since monitors are so much more compact than they used to be.
Flash Bastard
Either way, I definitely want a laptop to call my own, so.
CJ
yeah for sure
Flash Bastard
People-are-awake bump, in case anyone else has notions!
CJ
CJ
here's a solid option. downside is the hard drive is a bit small and it's integrated graphics instead of a discrete gpu, but if P4G is all you plan on playing, this should be more than sufficient
Sleepy Deer
Gateway 14.1" FHD Ultra Slim Notebook, Intel Core i5...
Basically the Stats you want to be looking at is what kind of processor it has, and how much ram it has.
Sleepy Deer
I'd expect an i5 to be able to do pretty much anything you need it to do, and 8gb of DDR4 ram is good, but 16GB is better these days because chrome and Firefox have become memory whores
Sleepy Deer
That one uses an SSD, so it should be alot speedier than an HDD; but depends on if you want to prioritise speed over storage space.
Flash Bastard
Worst case, USB drives are a thing.
