All they know is the land around it is cursed

every ten years a swarm of monsters comes out and ravages the countryside

but like, the monsters stick to a specific area so as long as you just stay out of that area, it's fine

It's not even a very big area

Anyway somehow they figure out that if you actually go down INTO the well

Which is full of hazards and monsters and really awful shit

And is super dangerous

You can in theory make it to the bottom of the well and activate a magic gem or somethng

Which does a few things

1: The next monster attack is skipped and the timer resets to ten years

2: The cursed land gets slightly bigger

3: It opens up a new level below the last one you conquered

So now to reset the cycle again you gotta go down FURTHER

So there's a whole economy built up around just desperately trying to dig deeper to keep the monster timer from running down to zero

But I'm imagining an aesthetic reminiscent of Valkyira Chronicles

where there's guns and shit but some monsters in the Well are too heavily armored for regular bullets so some guys have like

disel powered pile drivers on their arms

And there's some kind of deeply fucked up magic that can be used

Maybe there's some kind of cycle of chosen ones

But last time the chosen one broke the cycle because he didn't want to stop being the chosen one

And he's the one who's really driving the whole industry of mining the well for riches

And he's gonna fail at some point and hundreds of miles of countryside will be burned down

But until then he gets to keep on playing the hero and he gets to become absurdly wealthy in the process

He claims that there's a bottom of the well

and that if we can reach it, we can master the well forever and be safe

No one knows how true this is

I think if the chosen one does or willingly passes on their power, the whole Well resets

But the current chosen one is so powerful no norms person can beat him

His aging is slowed down by magic

And he is disinclined to give someone else a turn

I think magic is normally inaccessible to humans

The chosen one can use it because they’re special

But also there’s a special metal called spellsteel

You can make a vessel out of spellsteel and implant it in someone’s body and then they can use a spell

To use multiple spells you need multiple vessels

But a spell can be pretty versatile so most mages have like one or two tops

More than three would be considered dangerously excessive

Since you know you have to actually surgically implant hunks of metal in your body to use them. It’s not very safe and many mages have health issues

You can also make magic items with spell steel which are less versatile and powerful but it’s MUCH safer
