Well, he was never gonna accept Obi-Wan's attempt at finding the good in him. He just couldn't accept someone offering that to him when it was someone he hated so much. He made sure to try and close that door when he killed Satine.

It took finding people who had no stake in how he turned out for him to really understand why someone would go through the trouble of finding good in him to see it was there.

But Star Wars is nothing if not good for showing that there is redemption to be found in everyone besides those pure evil. Playing out such a long, drawn-out redemption arc for him has been really fun and it's only really gotten traction in the last couple of months, now that he's come to admit he cares about people here.
