[uspol] [work] I will say this about 2020 vs 2016; whatever happens, at least I don't have Joanne doing victory laps in front of me and squealing in happiness.
I'm lying in bed and he pokes his head in and takes a huff and goes "I know it's really bad and mean to say, but....Is it wrong for me to want them to all get COVID?" and I laughed and went "I mean, a BIT, I don't think you really want people to die no matter how stupid they are."
He goes "You've been more liberal and longer than me, how do you stand it???"and I'm like "Well... Jews have always been a political or religious or ethnic minority. You kinda take humor where it comes"
And he was moody and I hugged his hand and went "Hey, maybe we should be Republican. WE'RE gonna be okay, we're white and middle class. Maybe we've been looking at this all wrong. I'mma switch parties." and he groaned and went "noooooooo"
And I think where we left it is that I talked to him a bit about the reason he was so upset and anxious right now is because he cares about so many people, and that's not a bad thing; it's the reason I fell in love with him
He was so funny. He came into it going like "I KNOW WHAT THE ELECTORAL COLLEGE WAS DESIGNED FOR. MY PARENTS ARE ALWAYS SAYING IT'S FOR THE FARMERS BUT REALLY IT'S FOR THE SLAVE-OWNERS. I JUST SPENT 2 HOURS READING HISTORY."
I told him that even though our plan was to have 1 or 2 kids, that we really need to be having like 6 or 7 to become quiverful parents and balance things out with our liberal brood of radical children.
Sergio reminds me a lot of my ex, or rather, what I'd hoped my ex would evolve into. Unfortunately, my ex was still voting red as late as 2018 strictly because he didn't want to disappoint his parents or think critically. I'm so glad Sergio evolved
Sergio came to it slowly but of his own accord - he was already leaning Libertarian Independent when I met the guy. Four months into dating I was like "BERNIE SANDERS IS HERE IN BOSTON LET'S GO" and made him stand out in the freezing cold with me for hours to hear him speak
I think there's one or two lone cousins (in FLORIDA) on my dad's side who went Trump but most of his side is all-the-way democrat. Most of my mom's side is republican, I think she's the black sheep of the family comparatively speaking
My ex claimed to be a centrist, and we started dating pre-2016 election, so that was fine. He'd said he was scared after the election, but it turned out it wasn't because of the results, but rather because he was afraid people would find out he'd voted for the Dark Lord. Like... he knew enough to be ashamed of his vote, but not enough to not vote that way
And he figured it didn't matter, because Jersey is normally a blue state anyway. So fuck the electoral college for letting people think their vote doesn't matter, and so they don't have to think too critically about their votes
I'm so glad Sergio came to his conclusions on his own, because it doesn't matter if someone is liberal or conservative except in this election so long as they understand why they're voting the way they are
StarryOblivion
: i hate the electoral college so much. it's made me so disenfranchised towards voting. this was the first election i've voted in since i turned 18 (34 now), and i still don't feel like it mattered since my state is so red anyway.
also it's not my home county, but my parents', and where their parents lived for most of my adolescence, and where my dad's sisters still live, and where we go every year for Christmas
i love you 3000
, same. This is the first election my mother's ever voted in, and having to explain the EC to her was like telling a little kid that the tooth fairy is a sham. How we haven't abolished that shit and still call ourselves a democracy is beyond me.
because it'd probably take a constitutional amendment, which is dead in the water, and there are enough swing states who like the outsized amount of attention they get and so won't support the national popular vote pact
it's not likely to get any better because there are only really two other counties with large cities, everything else is Very Rural, but I'm proud of us anyway
The Berkshires cheered me up for Massachusetts. I was worried about them because they were oppressing Peter's vote and the Biden haybale was set on fire out there
One thing that's been interesting is how much georgia became a swing state. It's still going to go for Trump but the fact that it's so narrow is probably due to Stacey Abrams. She was the only person I wasn't sick of seeing in campaign ads by the end of it
North Carolina has swung another percent in the right direction since last night, but they're also really close to done counting, so I don't think they have it in them to swing quite over the line
it seems highly unlikely, but the adrenalin of poor sleep keeps me hoping, i just keep staring at the senate numbers and dying inside. as election goes
538 seems to think he's pulled it off -- they're not officially declaring anything, but they say WI and MI are likely to stay blue and AZ and NV are likely to be called that way. At which point the other three don't matter.
here's what they said: "Nevada. This one’s a bit more straightforward. Biden leads by only 0.6 percent or about 7,500 votes. But what’s remaining should be pretty good for him. It’s all mail-in ballots that were either received late in the process or which are still coming in —
in Nevada, mail ballots can be received by Nov. 10 provided they’re postmarked by Election Day. The mail ballots were quite blue in Nevada by party registration, much more so than in Arizona, including votes that arrived relatively late in the process. Likely Biden."
Yeah, 2016, I also ignored news, went to bed being like 'there's no way Trump can win, that's just a media puff pipe dream, right?' But had nightmares about him winning and then woke up and looked at news sites and just could not believe
I haven't been looking at all, I'm just so horrified it can even be close. That so many people looked at this trash fire and said 'yeah, this is good, let's keep going like this'
except in this electionso long as they understand why they're voting the way they are
