[adventures in medical billing] https://images.plurk.com/5RTSb7Lz8T43Y9huFGG3jJ.jpg
..... /gets on the phone I guess (unsure)
Jessie
torn between ".....what" and "HAHAHAHAHA that's cute and not gonna happen"
Jessie
(it's not a real bill and the hospital usually appeals twice before they send me anything so no worries there yet)
Jessie
I checked the dates on what they decided not to pay for and it's the scan that led to them finding cancer part 2? so I'm pretty sure I can argue the case for needing to have done the thing (LOL)
Jessie
but also healthcare in america is nuts
Jessie
I'm also looking at an actual bill for like $500 that's sending me on a hunt for shit to prove the legal equivalent of "NUH UH" (LOL)
Red Hair Jean
Healthcare in America is a load of shit.
morethan084
I hate our health care
vex appeal
Oh, I do NOT like that.
Jessie
LOLOL it gets better
Chi
jfc
Jessie
so I spoke to someone whose job is clearly to be on phones all day because he did NOT want to be on the phone with me ruining his quota with my bullshit
Jessie
BUT apparently the appeals already happened sometime between when this was printed and today
Jessie
because he was like "no we paid $900. you owe $30"
Jessie
and I dont really understand how a 17k charge can be solved with $900 but all of this stuff seems like imaginary numbers anyway (LOL)
Red Hair Jean
It really doesn't feel real when they get to that large of a size
inadequate tits
inadequate tits
TOO MANY ZEROS
Jessie
a reminder that people without insurance don't have the luxury of laughing at the idea of paying several thousand dollars for one test
Jessie
it's an arbitrary system where medical providers make up an arbitrary price, insurance makes up a much lower arbitrary price, and the providers go "cool thanks for the check" and take it
Jessie
but without the insurance element there, the insane arbitrary price actually gets charged to a real person
Jessie
it's infuriating and humbling at the same time
Jessie
(and a reminder that my current contract ends at the end of the spring semester and I'm going to need to find a way to extend that shit out (unsure))
A lot of times they pay $900 because they fight the hospital. Like a hospital will try to charge you $100 for a plastic cup
and the insurance company will ask for an itemized bill and suddenly all those charges go away
Jessie
yeah it's all made up numbers
It’s insane
vex appeal
Those made up numbers might be wildly different from one hospital to the next, too
Red Hair Jean
It's infuriating and frustrating.
The hospital is like on you flushed the toilet once? $500 water bill
vex appeal
Which on the one hand they're wildly made up, so why shouldn't they? On the other, surely they could at least pretend there's a real number.
And if you yourself gets a hospital bill always call and ask for an itemized bill
Magically things will go away

This is the size of the stack of medical bullshit from just 2020 (LOL) sparkle water for scale.
Jessie
oh oops doxxed myself /EDITS THAT
Jessie
okay it's fixed
dragillionaire
god I hate this
Red Hair Jean
Ungh, yeah.... If I bothered, I'd just want to set the stack on fire, really.
inadequate tits
cancer is already a nightmare, this just looks extra exhausting
Jessie
yeah it's usually like a 2-hour project when I'm doing anything more than going "oh another one of these /throws on pile for later"
e(Liz)a
Ugh this is bullshit. Being sick and getting care should cost a person $0.
