[catchall] oh my god why am i getting job interviews NOW?
spiteologist
anyway in unrelated news hi i am, notionally, alive. but also still crashing.
spiteologist
it's two days until my cousin's wedding! (on zoom)

I'm so excited for her and ALSO seriously convinced I'm going to forget it's happening, miss it, and look like an asshole
spiteologist
(she's had the WORST couple of years, even before the pandemic - she had a brain tumour diagnosis and while it was successfully operated on, she's spent a lot of time disabled, unable to work, and terrified of what might come next. and then she was JUST getting back to work when the pandemic hit. and she's shielding but her fiancé is a care worker...)
spiteologist
(anyway I'm just really happy that she gets to have something nice and positive in her life, she deserves it)
Pᴀssɪᴏɴ DᴇBᴀʀʀᴇ
maybe you just had to get through the rough patch!
spiteologist
maybe! but now it's a whole THING if I get interviews because it's no longer "can I register as a student while I'm working", it's "hey, I am in fact a student now, is that.... is that okay... oh god"
spiteologist
especially because I applied to mostly full-time posts and not all of them are close to Glasgow. (the one I got an interview invite for today is in Edinburgh, and I'm trying to figure out whether I should just contact them and be like "actually I probably shouldn't take a full-time band 4 job on the other side of the country from my university course")
spiteologist
("which is, in turn, another two hours from where i actually live" rural living bites me in the ass once again)
Nika
oh wait, your university courses actually require you to be places?? Right, I guess there's some lab stuff, oops
spiteologist
they don't currently (glasgow's on lockdown) but I don't know if and when they will
spiteologist
and the edinburgh job is an 18-month contract so it would definitely cover my entire re-studenting
Nika
hmm. What courses are you taking, again? Like, can you get through your entire re-studenting without labs, or is it a situation where they're going to have to make in-person labs happen sooner or later because you can't finish without them?
Nika
although you're probably right that in any case a full-time job plus courses is a lot to be doing even if the courses are all online :/
spiteologist
I don't think I have to do labs this term, but since a lot of what I'm missing from my degree is practical skills, I think sooner or later in-person labs are going to have to happen
Nika
/nod
Nika
I guess talk to the employers about that honestly and see if there's flexibility to give you somewhat fewer hours whenever that happens?
spiteologist
that's pretty much my plan, yeah.
spiteologist
I also need to get in touch with both interviewers because uhhh both Edinburgh and Glasgow are central belt and in lockdown rn, so I don't think it's really appropriate for me to travel there from a low-risk area if it can be avoided
Nika
yeah...
spiteologist
you know what wasn't a good idea while trying to shake off my sleepiness? making spaghetti with white sauce using oat milk so i basically just ate porridge pasta
spiteologist
it tasted fine but also god that was too rich for me to stay awake
Nika
porridge pasta... /UNSURE
spiteologist
it doesn't taste like porridge. it tastes like slightly bland white sauce. but sometimes i forget that seasoning the oat milk does not change the fact that oat milk is essentially still cold porridge water
Nika
rotfl
spiteologist
my life since like... may has been an intermittent process of "considering the inherent weirdness and yet extreme convenience of homemade oat milk"
spiteologist
i'm at a place where i just occasionally blend porridge and strain it through some old trousers and apparently that's normal to me now
Nika
old trousers (haha)
Nika
perfectly sensible yet also hilarious
spiteologist
YEAH THEY WERE THE BEST POROUS FABRIC I HAD IN MY RAG BAG
