If I'm looking at a big log

Like a mingle log that has a ton of toplevels

Then

I find it kind of overwhelming to read through the toplevels

Unless I start at the bottom and scroll up

that makes it way more mangaeable

And I don't know why

Brains, man

Maybe because later toplevels are less likely to have a million replies?

I usually set it to only show toplevels

But maybe even seeing that "(Show 94 comments)" has a subliminal effect

i don't know this feeling exactly but i totally get it

just doing something in a non-standard way makes it easier to engage with sometimes, for, just, no explicable reason

maybe it like

subconsciously breaks it into smaller tasks, somehow

when scrolling down the page you see the whole scrollbar as the remaining content you have left to read through, but when scrolling up the page you're not measuring progress with the scrollbar the same way, so your brain is better able to consider each toplevel its own chunk of the task

makes sense! i usually start on the back pages just because those are less likely to have gotten love
