I think most people would follow up with, “oh cool, can I play?” if that was their goal, and an explanation wouldn’t hurt their feelings.

For me it's like, I'd ask what you're playing/what you're doing and if it's something I don't know after I got the answer I would ask to know more about it with the intention of finding out if it's something that I'd like/that we could maybe do together!

and then if it was my intention to maybe do the thing with you I'd follow up with a "can I play/can I join you?"
