Master Chieve
Jet Lancer is HARD
Master Chieve
Picked it up because it was on sale
Master Chieve
The first few tutorial missions were easy-ish
Master Chieve
Then it's like "OKAY NOW WE'RE OUT OF THE KIDDIE POOL AND INTO THE BIG LEAGUE"
Master Chieve
And I am just getting curb stomped over and over again
Master Chieve
By every available mission
Master Chieve
Fuck this
Master Chieve
Also I can FEEL the bad gamer brain in me
Master Chieve
Because there's a difficulty setting on the main menu
Master Chieve
And it goes DOWN
Master Chieve
And right now the game just feels Too Hard
Master Chieve
But I don't WANT to change it to easy
Master Chieve
Because then I have LOST
Master Chieve
The game has BEATEN me
Master Chieve
And I can say "That's fucking stupid" as many times as I want but that doesn't change anything
Master Chieve
Quinneapolis you dealt with this kind of bad brain before
Master Chieve
How do you make yourself not hate everything
Quinneapolis
years of practice resetting my brain and learning to embrace the super give up
Quinneapolis
and occasional meditation on my impressive achievements of the past
Quinneapolis
like how you beat Cave Story's hell ending
Quinneapolis
you are Good at Video Games
Master Chieve
I did do that
Quinneapolis
and one individual video game cannot take that away
Bolt Vanderhuge
And I mean, if it's a genre that's outside your normal wheelhouse? It's fine.
Master Chieve
I guess it kinda is
Quinneapolis
yeah your main steeze is first person games
Master Chieve
steeze?
Quinneapolis
jam?
Quinneapolis
operational specialty
Bolt Vanderhuge
A lot of shoot 'em ups or aerial combat games often throw people, and even then, there's lots and lots of variance
Bolt Vanderhuge
In how each title can play
Bolt Vanderhuge
And like, I love shoot'em ups and such? But I fuckin' suck at most of them
Bolt Vanderhuge
lot of the skills only questionably transfer
RobotApocalypse
setting a game to easy mode isn't a loss/letting the game beat you.

it's exploiting a loophole that allows you to train up your skills until you can come back stronger in the next season and defeat it then
RobotApocalypse
but seriously though, i tell myself that there's no shame in playing games on easy mode because 1) the devs put in it there for a reason, might as well use it, 2) sometimes it takes a while to really figure out the nuances of gameplay in a new game, just think of easy mode as practice mode, and 3) games are supposed to be fun
RobotApocalypse
i understand the frustration of banging your head against a wall and feeling like "i should be able to do this!" but ultimately you gotta tell yourself that what you're trying right now isn't working, so you need to go try something else
RobotApocalypse
here is something i saw a lot back in my heavy DDR days: get on an arcade machine with somebody who's playing for the first time, and watch them set their difficulty to normal
RobotApocalypse
because there's the assumption that "normal mode" means that's how you're supposed to play the game
RobotApocalypse
but if you've never played DDR before, I'm here to tell you: normal mode will fucking murder you and throw your body in the river if you haven't already drilled in the basics playing on easy mode
RobotApocalypse
so that's the sort of framework i take with me into other games in other genres: if normal mode is too hard for me, then i should go play easy mode for a while to drill in the basics. once the basics come naturally, then i can bump up the difficulty and try again
Master Chieve
ugh okay fine let's just
Master Chieve
do the thing
Master Chieve
WAIT
Master Chieve
WHAT THE FUCK
Master Chieve
THERE ARE ONLY TWO DIFFICULTIES
Master Chieve
NORMAL AND NEW GAME+
Master Chieve
So I guess I'm just
Master Chieve
never beating this game
Master Chieve
great
RobotApocalypse
wait what???
Master Chieve
$10 down the drain
Master Chieve
NG+ isn't even UNLOCKED YET
RobotApocalypse
oh no....... why would you design a game like that
Master Chieve
IT LOOKED SO COOL
Master Chieve
BUT I JUST
Master Chieve
I CAN'T DO IT
Master Chieve
THERE'S TOO MUCH GOING ON
Master Chieve
There is an accessibility mode
Master Chieve
that has like
Master Chieve
an invincibility toggle
Master Chieve
So you can just be invincible
Master Chieve
But I think that's too far in the other direction
Master Chieve
I don't want to get my teeth punched out over and over again
Master Chieve
But I do want SOME challenge
Master Chieve
But no there's
Master Chieve
- Fuck you be perfect mode
Master Chieve
- Easy baby street not even really a game anymore mode
Master Chieve
I haven't been burned this bad on a game since Lo-Fi Ping Pong
Master Chieve
I'm so fucking mad
RobotApocalypse
looking at the nintendo page for the game it says there's adjustable dodge windows in the accessibility options as well, have you tried that?
Master Chieve
Was there?
RobotApocalypse
that's what it says
RobotApocalypse

Master Chieve
oh hey
Master Chieve
"Invincibility" isn't just a toggle
Master Chieve
It has a half-damage mode too
Master Chieve
okay let's actually
RobotApocalypse
oh nice!!
Master Chieve
fiddle with some settings rather than immediately go into a rage
RobotApocalypse
i guess lesson 2 is always go digging through the options/settings to see what's available
Master Chieve
Doubling HP did indeed make the game playable
RobotApocalypse
awesome!! i'm glad you found a solution!
