Where Is Harkan
actually that meme reminded me of a setting concept I was never QUITE able to get to work
Where Is Harkan
But the basic idea was that there was a chosen one who was destined to save the world
Where Is Harkan
And the protagonist wasn't the chosen one but didn't realize it
Where Is Harkan
So he spends the first half of his story preparing to fight the ultimate evil
Where Is Harkan
And then loses
Where Is Harkan
And then spends the second half of the story trying to subtly guide the ACTUAL chosen one
Where Is Harkan
But he knows that the forces of darkness have their eyes on him so he HAS to limit his contact with the chosen one
Where Is Harkan
Resulting in the protagonist being the super badass but mysterious mentor character who says cryptic shit to the hero and then vanishes without explaining anything
Where Is Harkan
I imagined the protag had a friend who was a mage of some kind
Where Is Harkan
Who had a spell that could temporarily mask them from being tracked by the forces of evil
ғᴏxʏᴍᴏʀᴏɴ
honestly that's probably the best excuse for a mentor to be that way, like
Where Is Harkan
So you'd have a scene where they had that spell up and were trying to explain things to the chosen one but before they can get into the meat of things the mage is like "Two minutes"
Where Is Harkan
And he's like "fuck" and vanishes
ғᴏxʏᴍᴏʀᴏɴ
'literally if i stuck around long enough to explain the forces of evil would find and kill you'
Where Is Harkan
So the chosen hero is having their own battle
Where Is Harkan
Off in the background
Where Is Harkan
While the protag is running around the edges, keeping villains the chosen ones aren't high enough level to fight yet from finding them
Where Is Harkan
Playing misdirection
You're Quinner
perhaps it's part of the prophetic mechanics that the chosen one can't know he's the chosen one
Where Is Harkan
perhaps
You're Quinner
so that he can't go like "listen I have 2 minutes you're the chosen one ask important questions first"
Where Is Harkan
Instead he has to like
Where Is Harkan
frame HIMSELF for various attrocities
Where Is Harkan
And then be like "Ahaha you fool of a hero. YOu know nothign!"
Where Is Harkan
"If you want to face me then seek me out at [LOCATION OF THE NEXT PLOT MACGUFFIN]"
Where Is Harkan
So you've got the party of young, stalwart heroes who are fighting dragons and freeing down and then you've got the party of older, tired, more morally gray heroes who have already failed to save the world and now are working in the shadows so that someone else can still get a chance
Where Is Harkan
But the camera follows the old guys instead of the young guys
Echo
Shit, that's so cool.
ShaynaIsHere
it IS.
I support this.
A Grinning DM
If I owned a major game studio I would probably steal this idea because I think it could make a million dollars.
Where Is Harkan
It would be tricky to land the ending
Where Is Harkan
Since you come down to the ultimate problem of
Where Is Harkan
"The player fights the final boss half way through the game and loses"
Where Is Harkan
"Then in the finale an NPC fights the final boss and wins"
Where Is Harkan
"And that's kinda lame"
Where Is Harkan
Like I think you could DO it but it would be tricky
Infychu
I feel like you'd want something like "Your party is holding off the mooks and/or sneaking around doing the set up for said NPC to be CAPABLE of saving the day instead of getting completely murdered."
Infychu
So it'd be like a final boss escort mission instead of a traditional battle.
You're Quinner
even then that's kind of an anticlimax
Infychu
Truth
Where Is Harkan
I think what you'd need
Where Is Harkan
is a secondary villain that you CAN beat
Where Is Harkan
Someone who isn't as cosmically powerful and undefeatable
Where Is Harkan
But is still just really fun to HATE
Where Is Harkan
You fight Kuja while the party fights Necron
Infychu
Yeah, that works. Have The Big Bad fight happen off screen.
Where Is Harkan
Or, alternatively
Where Is Harkan
Have the chosen one join your party for the finale
You're Quinner
or you fight the reason that there has to be a cycle of chosen ones and dark lords every generation
You're Quinner
to ensure that this truly is the final battle
Where Is Harkan
there you go
kamikasei
I had an idea years back for a game where you are the final boss
