I think that's essentially where their stance diverged in that Stephen is very much cause over loyalty and in this instance his loyalty to Gaby as a sort of representative of the world's people is also caught up in his dedication to cause so
he trusts people independently. it's just when you put them in a group and give them a title he pumps the brakes. so like, if he knew them all, sure, go team. as long as they're faceless and inaccessible and intangible for all intents and purposes
Stephen's also a bit like that their relationship managed to survive fully undented from torture groundhog day and non-consensual sleep only to run aground on his moral highground
but yeah i think the next thing will be the defining one, whether that's like some intense working together / post battle / broment shit or some opposite sides of another issue shit
it's really nice to stumble into just Unexpected Stuff in general and conflict is always super juicy especially between friendlies so this has just been a chefs kiss and yeah I'm excited to see what if anything comes of it later down the line
