Another, more casual request for feedback! We are trying to figure out what the behavior should be with the new icon browser set to 'no text' mode, particularly for icons with multiple keywords
I feel like "No text mode" kinda implies someone doesn't care which keywords are used, so having text displayed seems counterintuitive. If someone wants to pick a specific keyword, they could just use text mode.
personally, i wouldn't want to see them--and when i click through and select one, i'd really prefer if the cursor returned to the textbox for the actual comment if possible. right now, after you click through, the icon dropdown is the thing that's selected, if that makes sense, which isn't helpful for me - i just picked an icon!
I have no icons with multiple keywords, but i think i wouldn't MIND them existing for the purpose of picking (which I understand is the problem, it needs to know which keyword to default to if there are several) if it wasn't generating such a huge amount of filler space. It looks silly!
It if HAD several keywords though, default to first?
Yeah, it'd be great if selecting the icon (esp on mobile) could close the icon browser with that icon selected. If I change my mind on which one I want, I can open it again
(i'm like 90% sure it used to go back to the textbox, because i keep trying to hit my up and down arrows to adjust paragraphs, and it ends up changing which icon i picked, haha)
i want to echo the idea to just remove the text or alternatively, put the text at the top of the icon browser similar to how it used to be so i COULD check it if i wanted to.
When I've imported icons, it merges duplicates, which is great, but I've noticed that, when I have similar but different keywords, it merges the keywords with a comma between them... then, I try to delete one version of the keywords, but I can't.
when I select an icon I find it really grating for the keyword box to pop up underneath it (particularly on mobile). If I need a specific keyword I use the search function.
I'd say just the first entered keyboard would be fine? I don't think a lot of people really care about what hover-keyword is displayed - they're mostly useful for searching through large amount of icons pre-selection.
i agree with everyone else who said nay to the keyword popping up in the middle of the browser with 'no text' mode - if i don't want text i just don't want text, bottom line!
Another 'I don't use multiple keywords and choose no text, so no text at all is preferred' vote. I have no text, I view by picture. I actually prefer how it is with the old menu, ala the select/dropdown menu at the top.
Like, one version of the icon has I like mudkips and another version has I love mudkips... so the end result is a single icon with the keywords I like mudkips, I love mudkips. So, when I try to delete I love mudkips, it tells me I can't.
I liked the way it was before this push with no words when I turn the words off and the select button at the top instead of between the image rows. I don't care about my keywords at all and wouldn't care if I never saw them, but I understand that some people might want them displayed.
a smaller space at the top might be fine, its the HUGE expanse of random space between icons which looks strange, especially if you only have one short keyword! it's just visually offputting?
For myself keyword use is important. Even if hovering over the caption is rarely truly important, I do things like sometimes I have 30 icons uploaded and then I have 15-A, 15-B. And then when I have fewer icons, I will give one icon the keywords both 15-A and 15-B. But defaulting to first entered keyword, like Luna (appleblossoms) said, is fine.
here's what I mean, it's the spacing aesthetic that bothers me most rather than the existence of the text honestly. if it was somewhere tidier I'd notice it less
I do really like the pop-up window format on mobile though since no more fat fingering stuff. And the select button is great, but ... yeah, the keywords part is visually very jarring
So if it was above rather than bumping huge space between rows it might be less strange if it's required for other users for picking a keyword out of several
When you have the text added on all icons, it all makes sense and looks good and works fine that way, but it's just "suddenly cumbersome" when text crops up unnecessarily. imo.
One thing I've always requested with the icon pop up browser is I wish that you could organize it via keywords alphabetically. It's always shown up in upload order.
also, and this is NOT a huge deal, but once you HAVE selected an icon, if you go BACK to reselect with the visual selector I'd love it if there was an auto scroll to the current selection instead of starting at the top again
because in practice I see another icon I like better two icons to the left of whatever I picked the first time and go back to choose that one like a super indecisive person
I remember being a little head tilty over that at first since "Hey, I selected it this way" but it never did, so I just figured it was one of those things.
did one of the old icon browsers have an option to set sort? I feel like it did but I pick icons pretty much always by keyword so I don't use the browser much
Yeah, if it was there, it's no longer there. The only alphabetical option you have now is the one where you can view the whole page of a user's icons. Browser's never done that. I believe I suggested it once upon a time, but it would also have been ages ago.
I'd also prefer not to have keywords displayed at all in No Text mode (or only displayed at the top of the browser) and maybe have the select button be smaller? It might not be bad without the keyword adding to the spacing though. I do definitely like being able to select at the icon without having to scroll back up to the top though
Yeah, echoing that if I’m using the icon browser, I’m going on picture more than keywords (and am most likely on a rp journal where the keywords are as much to prevent the display issues that can happen without keywords being set as to identify the icon)
I also agree that for "no text" i would expect no text whether before or after selecting! it means i'm choosing by the picture, not the keywords, and if i want keywords i will choose text or use the dropdown menu
adding my voice to the others; usually when i'm using the icon browser it's for the visual, not for the keywords. i liked on the previous browser that when i selected an icon the keywords showed at the top of the browser (for accounts where i've bothered keywording, at least)--but i'd want it to be unobtrusive and not smack in the middle of things
I would agree that no text means no text, especially since the text showing up kind of breaks the box as is, and feels like it's not what you would like it to look like!
also adding to the voices of "no text" means no text. the previous icon browser where the keywords popped up at the top was unobtrusive enough, but honestly it wouldn't bother me for them not to show, period, when "no text" is selected. when you close the icon browser the keywords always show in the dropdown menu.
regarding the focus issue - we just did some quick testing and with the old icon browsers, when you selected an icon and closed the browser focus went to nowhere, which in all the browsers we tested is functionally 'first item on the page'
it's possible some obscure browsers took this to mean refocusing wherever you had last focused, but it definitely doesn't seem to have been common or default behavior
which is weird, because i've been using chrome for a long time, and it generally stays updated! and the focus didn't go to the dropdown, because i've never had the "suddenly i'm inadvertently changing icons" problem before
(because if you pick an icon before doing anything else, and you use subjects, going to the text body would throw you out of your flow, but if you don't, you'd want the text body, etc)
some insight into the dev struggles (shared with permission): " I put so much work into making the keyword select thing usable in no-text mode, and no one actually wanted it. not even I wanted it! I was just trying to get them out of that top slot where they took up space and were useless on mobile!"
okay, so I don't use multiple icon keywords so I'm not specifically sure of the context so take my comment with that in mind, haha. as other people have said, my problem was mostly with it basically creating a new row for the words. I had a moment of what if it appeared above the icon chosen but then I remembered that some icon keywords can be rather long
I think anything I would say has probably been said. The only issue I consistently have is me selecting and icon, going to type, then the letter i type selecting an icon by keyword... and I, like a true champion, open icon selector again, pick and icon and do the same dumb thing LOL
echoing no keywords in no text mode - also putting in a gentle request for the “select” button to once again be at the top and not subject to scrolling so that when I pick the icon I think I want and scroll through the rest to confirm, i have the select button right there instead of having to scroll back through 300 icons to find it.
not having to scroll up to the top in mobile to select is life altering, if theres any option to have the button both places would be rad but its just so much easier to use if its right there
it was a pain on mobile for sure esepcially since sometimes in the process of scrolling I accidentally tap another icon...and also on deskptop because wow, now I don't need to move my mouse so far!!
also I'm going to echo what people have been saying that the no text option doesn't need text at all. if that's at all possible, it'll be perfect for me!
Maybe we should have the Icon Browse function available to all accounts? I keep forgetting what I keyworded my icons to and scrolling through the list on a free account is rather tedious.
First world problems complains but when I write a tag and hit 'preview' to see how it looks, the preview button is on the left while the 'Post Comment' is on the right. But once it shows me the preview comment, the buttons have shifted positions.
yeah nthing no text. not having to scroll on mobile is a GODSEND and I'm so glad it was implemented, but the sudden white space with text appearing is jarring and pointless on desktop when I just doubleclick anyway. F to the person who worked so hard to implement that and had it met with resounding dislike, that stinks.
It if HAD several keywords though, default to first?
I like mudkips
and another version hasI love mudkips
... so the end result is a single icon with the keywordsI like mudkips, I love mudkips
. So, when I try to deleteI love mudkips
, it tells me I can't.
