[US Politics] Well. The Supreme Court's having a fun day today.
Shard
So far, what I've seen is that half of Oklahoma is Native American land.
Sharkleberry
Good.
Lofwyr
can you explain?
Shard
Not so sure about the CASE that brought it to the court. But I don't know much of the details there, either.
Shard
Supreme Court says eastern half of Oklahoma is Nativ...
6LilacMimeLions
gorsuch believes the government is required to abide by its treaty agreements with natives
Lofwyr
thanks!
6LilacMimeLions
so it's gonna be an interesting few decades of jurisprudence
Shard
I think the conservatives are going to rue the day they put him on the court.
6LilacMimeLions
"you weren't supposed to believe our strict textualism fig leaf!"
Shard
The Court also ruled that Trump has to turn his tax returns over to New York prosecutors because they're legal documents.
6LilacMimeLions
the case that prompted it is... unfortunate
PrincessBatty
ok such mixed feelings here.
6LilacMimeLions
the Oklahoma ruling, not the Trump one
PrincessBatty
I think McGirt should do his full sentence and rot in prison, but the precedent that the land is Native is potentially huge.
Shard
Pretty much.
Shard
It won't REALLY change much, except how the Native population in the area are prosecuted for crimes.
The Slickest
It apparently throws upwards of 1700 criminals cases into chaos
The Slickest
But I am all for it.
6LilacMimeLions
ianal but doesn't this mean other natives in the affected area can beat the shit out of him every day and twice on Sunday and the state has no jurisdiction?
6LilacMimeLions
like on an individual level I'm sure this sucks for a lot of crime victims, but on the other hand, maybe the US shouldn't have pursued a policy of genocide for centuries
PrincessBatty
Platinum
tribe's lawyers say he can still be tried federally
ᛕﻉɭค๓ٱՇץ
so, living in Oklahoma - it's very complicated and throws some things into chaos but it's potentially a good thing
ᛕﻉɭค๓ٱՇץ
it's going to be difficult to rearrange things to actually fit with this ruling and I need to actually read up a lot more on it
The Slickest
Their whole defense was "congress had meant to shrink the reservation"
The Slickest
But the fact that congress didn't, but everyone just pretended it did
The Slickest
And now they have to reckon with it.
ᛕﻉɭค๓ٱՇץ
yeah, it's something that needed to be addressed; it's just going to be a lot of red tape and chaos in figuring out the implementation, imo.
ᛕﻉɭค๓ٱՇץ
the state gov't has been fighting with tribal gov'ts for years over every little thing
ᛕﻉɭค๓ٱՇץ
this finally gives the tribal gov'ts a legal leg to stand on
AnabelVIII
im losing my mind
AnabelVIII
what a thing to wake up to
Shard
Anyway. Apparently, there's another ruling that means that the tax returns won't be released before the election, but at least there's a start.
andalite!
huh.
Tad Cooper
Interesting to note on the tax returns rulings that all 9 justices agree the president is not immune to prosecution
Tad Cooper
Kinda like that wasn’t the question but I see you sliding that warning in there
Shard
Yeeeeeep.
