for me Sephiroth wandering in from the end of Advent Children was enough to totally turn me against the game, which sucks because like 95% of it looks amazing, but that's a dealbreaker for me.
I don't wanna harp too much on FF7R because I feel like it'd validate the weird whiny fanboys going "But they CHANGED things!" and that's not even what I'd have to complain about, but
I really really hate all the expanded universe FF7 stuff and the thing that made me interested in the game in the first place was recapturing the charm of the original and (seemingly) getting away from all the post-AC stuff, so. That's where my reaction comes from.
It's just that SE has struggled to deliver on a great FF experience in a long time, I'd categorize it in the Bioware fashion where expectations are set higher and middling success is interpreted as abject failure
