[ff7r spoilers] here's something weird
Quinneapolis
once Sephiroth shows up at Shinra Tower
Quinneapolis
and he's like, causing problems in reality
Quinneapolis
and stabbing people and shit
Quinneapolis
why are the non-Cloud party members never like
Quinneapolis
"hey Cloud, what's up with that guy"
Princess Emily
presumably they're just like, too busy, trying to get out of the tower of climb the tower or whatever
Princess Emily
I'd imagine
Quinneapolis
they even get a beat after he leaves and the Whispers heal up Barret and shit
Quinneapolis
and Barret's like 'you get your man?' 'no he got away'
Quinneapolis
no followup question
Quinneapolis
no "by the way what the FUCK is going on"
★ тяу-нαя∂уи
i mean on one hand yes this desperately needs to be questioned
★ тяу-нαя∂уи
on the other i'm leaning towards emily on the there's NO FUCKING TIME boat
Quinneapolis
Tifa like "wait is THIS who you keep hallucinating in public"
★ тяу-нαя∂уи
sidenote but i do genuinely like the moment of pants-shitting terror when you realize tifa's reacting to sephiroth
★ тяу-нαя∂уи
OH FUCK THAT ONE'S REAL?!
Quinneapolis
overall I think FF7R is gonna end up for me in a similar place as the God of War reboot
Quinneapolis
of going from Excellent to Good the more I think about it in hindsight
Quinneapolis
as I get distance and start to see the seams
oh i'm scary
has that been happening with Dad of Boy?
Quinneapolis
for me, a bit
Quinneapolis
with things like
Quinneapolis
how 80% of the plot is just resolving various inconveniences between you and the place you're trying to get
Quinneapolis
or the constant repeated bosses
Quinneapolis
like there are about four really wild GOW setpiece boss fight adventures in dad of oby
Quinneapolis
and three of them are baldur
EsperBot
It's definitely a game punching about its budgetary weight
EsperBot
remember when they came out and said how much money the game cost to make and it was like 1/10th of what everyone had assumed
Quinneapolis
FF7R has a bigger budget weight class than dad of boy but it still has a lot of weird stumbling points
Quinneapolis
like how the combat system is really cool except from the like eighteen enemies with annoying, frustrating gimmicks you have to work around
Quinneapolis
and how like 3/4ths of the sidequests are barely anything
EsperBot
for me Sephiroth wandering in from the end of Advent Children was enough to totally turn me against the game, which sucks because like 95% of it looks amazing, but that's a dealbreaker for me.
Princess Emily
I don't wanna harp too much on FF7R because I feel like it'd validate the weird whiny fanboys going "But they CHANGED things!" and that's not even what I'd have to complain about, but
Princess Emily
the combat encounters and/or difficulty could really have been tuned better
Quinneapolis
I was fine with Sephiroth personally
Quinneapolis
but yeah the balance tuning is a mess
Princess Emily
yeah Sephiroth was fine
Quinneapolis
it's all over the place
Princess Emily
I think one of my main complaints is that a lot of bosses and even some enemies are like
Quinneapolis
and the only difficulty levels are "free" and "fuck you"
Princess Emily
you can counter them through the right materia combinations, but you can't
Princess Emily
change your materia in battle
Quinneapolis
Hell House took twice as long as it had to becuase I didn't have all the elemental materia equipped
Princess Emily
so it's either "read a guide" or "fuck you, die to this boss and then try again (or slowly chip it down and take two hours)"
EsperBot
I really really hate all the expanded universe FF7 stuff and the thing that made me interested in the game in the first place was recapturing the charm of the original and (seemingly) getting away from all the post-AC stuff, so. That's where my reaction comes from.
Quinneapolis
fair enough
Quinneapolis
like I still overall like the game! quite a bit!
Quinneapolis
but perfect it ain't
Princess Emily
I really look forward to where they take it :|a
Quinneapolis
loads better than I was expecting after FFXV
EsperBot
Or really every non-MMO final fantasy in the last decade
EsperBot
It's been a while since there was a single-player final fantasy that wasn't hot trash
Quinneapolis
yeah
voidstaresback
I'd say XIII-2 and XIII-3 were compelling
voidstaresback
They had some good things going on but the execution was kind of muddled
voidstaresback
It's just that SE has struggled to deliver on a great FF experience in a long time, I'd categorize it in the Bioware fashion where expectations are set higher and middling success is interpreted as abject failure
