but athens is - it's not pretty city, not like rome. or palermo.
delatour
actually, modern sparta is probably a little more relaxing, just because its small and nice and people mostly follow driving instructions
delatour
but it was fascinating. the bones of the city were so old, and the rest of the city so- new?
beachcryptid
nodnod sounds like jerusalem a bit
delatour
Not new. Cheap and thrown up quickly after WW2, as the country changed. But it felt raw, and real. And I loved it.
beachcryptid
delatour
Crete's a lot... not necessarily dirty, but older? a little less with the times?
delatour
It's just layers- Minoan and Mycenean and Roman and Venetian and Ottoman, it just sucks everything in
delatour
It's terribly rustic, and terribly beautiful.

this is a place up at the National Park about half an hours drive from me. They have a short hike that goes through this wetland (which is a fun story in itself. 50 years ago it was a junkyard and 50 years before that it was part of the canal system)
Lel
and yes, thats a Great Blue Heron in the center
Lel
theres a nesting ground near the marsh, which is also a fun place to go
