i think you have to cancel your own flights during this and some airlines will give you the miles to apply to other flights on their airline

The airline will, but the travel agency is being really shitty about it all. Like they'll issue the "refund" but then charge $500+ in processing fees for it, which almost negate the cost of the flights

Assuming they actually process the cancellation at all. There are lots of folks on their social media like "hey I filled out your form and did what you told me to and my flight is in two hours and still not cancelled"
