I love Second Life, I really do. But I can't understand why some think it would be a great tool to use for working from home. I know I would ever do that, gimme a break. How the Covid-19 work from home situation could help...
Caitlin Tobias
In my previous job the IT department would get a heart attack by the idea of installing 'games' on the company hardware, and the fact SL logs all your shit, yeah let's discuss delicate company information out in the open!
Caitlin Tobias
I work from home all the time and manage perfect with phone, skype and whatsapp
Gogo ♔
Yep! SL is not the right took
Gogo ♔
Tool*; I would say there’s too much trolling, and learning curve
Gogo ♔
Unless those avatars are confined to that region, and only use library items
Tutti Anatine
True! WhatsApp is not the best tool either though. Trying to get people to move over to Signal has not proven very fruitful, but at least we have the chat tool still
Caitlin Tobias
for my work Whatsapp is perfect, I use the web version and it never fails - no fiddling on phone
Caitlin Tobias
Skype is great for conference calls and sharing screens if needed
Caitlin Tobias
I don't need to see avatars of my clients or co-workers....

I meant WhatsApp in a sense that you wouldn't want company sensitive data over Facebook's line
Caitlin Tobias
Tutti Anatine
: ah yes, that too
Caitlin Tobias
Tutti Anatine
: the things I do on Whatsapp are never company sensitive, but basic daily tasks and questions. As soon as something serious has to be discussed we pick up the phone
Tutti Anatine
Check. Same here. Another reason for this is that colleagues prefer to use the company chat tool for work discussion so they can truly unwind from work without being disturbed on personal messaging

I think this comes up now working from home is new to a lot of people?
Caitlin Tobias
I am selfemployed, my laptop can handle secondlife and I can install whatever the hell I want. My husband works from home now, but on his company laptop which is configured so that he can hardly access anything not work related, let alone install something himself that is not approved by IT.
Caitlin Tobias
(ok, he works for a bank, he cant even insert a USB flash drive tohis work laptop that isn't approved and issued by IT, and with good reason)

Some company's IT departments are hopelessly protective of their infrastructure. I'm lucky my employer isn't like that, we just have some critical standards to stick to related to data protection. Working from home is fine too
kesseret
it's not corporation friendly at all. not when zoom works all the time.
kesseret
Google and Ms teams is built into their gsuite and office 365
kesseret
no need for secondlife. it's not reliable enough and it's a game
Caitlin Tobias
kesseret
: indeed, it is game. Not to get into the eternal discussion but that is how IT and companies see and treat it.
kesseret
agree. I mean as once IT that is how I would see it on my network.

Tutti Anatine
: I use signal! Only a few people I know do too.
Tutti Anatine

: Yay! Kick Facebook's butt
kesseret
signal for sms. Tor for browsing. except when using personallh identifiable stuff like plurk and fb

I don't think this will benefit LL in terms of anyone coming to SL to work. But it was a way to remind people that SL is still there, while not looking like assholes making a profit out of a crisis. I think it was a smart pr move on their part.

their reduction offer I mean
