Granted, idk if I could ever kill him off because he's so damn pure, but I mean, it wouldn't be the first time he's died or even in a traumatic fashion. (Spoilers for the second book, but one of his deaths is EXTREMELY DARK, like owner holding onto his dying body crying at him not to die dark.)

I think you'd be alright with the first book. It's a lot more upbeat and happy then the second book. Or just watch the movie. Not a lot of book enthusiasts like it, but I do think it boiled down the elements without making anything too sad.
