мαи∂α
okay so I never wear make-up, and I think I want to give it a try. Does anyone have any basic make-up tutorials they would recommend? Or make-up essentials I may not realize I need

мαи∂α
currently looking at picking up (cheap): foundation, concealer, blush/bronzer, eye pencil, mascara, nude eyeshadow, matte lip cream, lip pencil, couple of brushes, and make-up remover

LOVE☆STRUCK
she doesn't do just makeup tutorials but personally I like Bunny/grav3yardgirl's makeup tutorials bc she comes at it from the perspective of someone who doesn't feel she's like, A Makeup Artist, and knows her fanbase well enough to either try her tutorials with more inexpensive items and/or suggest cheaper alternatives

мαи∂α
that sounds like a perfect starting place

LOVE☆STRUCK
EYESHADOW YOU'VE BEEN DOING WRONG!
there's also this very good eyeshadow experiment/tutorial that i think is very good for people starting out

LOVE☆STRUCK
simply doesn't do many makeup tutorials but she DEFINITELY comes at them from the perspective of a beginner, which i found really helpful

мαи∂α
make-up has never been something I've really done or learned how to do, but I think it'd be nice to try

мαи∂α
I need to look up how best to remove make-up too for while I'm practicing, I wonder if water and a washcloth would be fine...

LOVE☆STRUCK
it would work fine! it would not be the easiest for certain makeups, and some longer-lasting makeups require some sort of oil to remove

LOVE☆STRUCK
if you're not in the mood to go out for some facial oil coconut oil breaks down almost every kind of makeup

мαи∂α
okay, I don't think I'm getting anything hard to remove, especially to start haha

LOVE☆STRUCK
sometimes cheaper products can be longer lasting than you expect!

мαи∂α
then I may be cursed (and that's okay)

LOVE☆STRUCK
sometimes it's the only way to be

LOVE☆STRUCK
generally tho if something is being stubborn it's better to either try an oil or cleanser or just wait for it to fade over a few washes rather than like, scrubbing

мαи∂α
that's good to know, thank you

мαи∂α
new year's goals are to take better care of myself and try new things, so this is on the list

LOVE☆STRUCK
heck yeah! and honestly even if you don't end up liking it for daily use you might just have fun doing it

мαи∂α
yeah!! I think it'll be fun

Mr. Vocabulary
eye primer and overall setting spray are non optional IMHO

Cᴏғғᴇᴇ Sɪɴɴᴇʀ
I'm only middling at makeup but the first thing I learned was dont worry about eyes too much because 1. They are hard and 2. IT LOOKS WEIRD IF THATS ALL YOU GOT and 3. It hard lol

Cᴏғғᴇᴇ Sɪɴɴᴇʀ
Also Practice!!! But be careful about irritating your skin (especially eye area) when you do, if you apply/wash off/ etc too many times you'll get raw

Cᴏғғᴇᴇ Sɪɴɴᴇʀ
I went for like... mid-level stuff at sephora when I finally got stuff. I ended up with a makeup forever foundation, Nars concealer, makeup forever setting powder (I figured the same brand would play nice together), one liquid lipstick colour I liked that was all-purpose and an eyeshadow palatte that was focused around a single colour group (so you can't

Cᴏғғᴇᴇ Sɪɴɴᴇʀ
Really fuck it up lol)

Cᴏғғᴇᴇ Sɪɴɴᴇʀ
I also got a few brushes and makeup sponges for application

Cᴏғғᴇᴇ Sɪɴɴᴇʀ
Oh and a blush!! I don't remember what I have, but you need depth so you don't have a weird mannequin face lol

Cᴏғғᴇᴇ Sɪɴɴᴇʀ
Idk how to accomplish like..... A "less" look, lol. Maybe CC cream and lip and mascara and done.

мαи∂α
eye make-up seems like a bitch, no lie... and the few attempts I've made I always messed up trying to do mascara and shit

мαи∂α
Mr. Vocabulary
okay, eye primer I definitely forgot shit. I'll need to look into setting spray too

мαи∂α
I went with things more on the lower budget side to practice with, if I stick with it I may go for more mid-level things

❝marti❞
I like this gal's videos (link is to her "for beginners" playlist)
HACKS, TIPS & TRICKS FOR BEGINNERS - YouTube

мαи∂α
thank you!!!

❝marti❞
I'm in the "uhh I think I might vaguely know what I'm doing??" stage of this so

❝marti❞
Solidarity

LOVE☆STRUCK
tbh i only ever do the eye

LOVE☆STRUCK
but i am also a boy and have a different style of doing it than most of these

LOVE☆STRUCK
but you really can get away with Just Eyeliner or Just One Color Smoked OUt

LOVE☆STRUCK
you don't have to do anything super fancy

мαи∂α
I'm gonna keep it simple to start and it may end up being my "mess around on the weekend" thing for a bit, since I am godawful at waking up with enough time in the morning for anything beyond getting out the door

LOVE☆STRUCK
oh yeah then you can definitely learn how to smudge one color on the corner of each eye and blend it out smooth. top w simple eye liner & go

Mr. Vocabulary
the Nyx setting spray is like $6 at CVS and perfectly fine if that helps!!

Mr. Vocabulary
hard agree just start with one color for eyes for a while

LOVE☆STRUCK
also yeah to go back to primers, unfortunately some palettes won't have the color payoff they're supposed to without primer

LOVE☆STRUCK
but WITH a primer you can get those cheap ass 5 Below palettes to look good to

LOVE☆STRUCK
*too

Mr. Vocabulary
primer

Mr. Vocabulary
you can use a thick matte concealer as eye primer as well tho not all concealers work for that just fyi

❝marti❞
Oh, uhm... Is BB cream adequate as a primer?

LOVE☆STRUCK
it depends on if that bbcream is also a foundation or concealer

Mr. Vocabulary
we're talking about eye primers! for face, it depends on the look

Mr. Vocabulary
I personally would not use bb cream as a primer for a "full face" look, but for daily average day I will use my cc cream + powder foundation

❝marti❞
Ohh...I've been putting BB cream on my eyelids to prime them. lol

LOVE☆STRUCK
it's like, the primers go in and fill the microscopic cracks on the skin, so that the pigments stay on top of the skin rather than gathering in those cracks

Mr. Vocabulary
I mean it's not bad it's just a matter of color payoff

мαи∂α
I may have to stop at Walgreens/CVS for primer and setting spray, I put in an order somewhere for the other things

Mr. Vocabulary

LOVE☆STRUCK
and some bb creams can do that, but most of them are meant to be absorbed into the skin and like, moisturize it, rather than provide something to go on top of it

LOVE☆STRUCK
you could also get away with putting just a TEENY BIT of foundation on the eye, but you wanna b careful bc foundations are thicker

мαи∂α
a lot of nyx, elf, and maybelline

❝marti❞
Oh wow, okay

LOVE☆STRUCK
personally i don't use foundation but that's my skin sensitivity!

Mr. Vocabulary
the eye makeup will also last a lot longer

❝marti❞
I just been doing things without knowing why lol

Mr. Vocabulary

мαи∂α
I got this eyeshadow palette because it looked cute

LOVE☆STRUCK
oh ELF's stuff is super cute! it just almost Requires primer

Mr. Vocabulary
oh that's definitely an Urban Decay Naked knockoff SOLID CHOICE

LOVE☆STRUCK
but concealer do work great for it

мαи∂α
I'm all for affordable knock offs LOL

LOVE☆STRUCK
ELF does sell their own primer and.... im ok with some of them, the glitter primer especially

LOVE☆STRUCK
even though i don't use it for glitter

Mr. Vocabulary
yeah, agree, you can get away with cheaper makeup if you do enough primer & setting

мαи∂α
yeah, I just didn't realize I needed primer because it wasn't on the intial checklist I found

Mr. Vocabulary
I also use glitter primer for maximum color payoff LOL

LOVE☆STRUCK
YEAH HAHA high five

мαи∂α
but that's easily fixed

LOVE☆STRUCK
absolutely

мαи∂α
there's a walgreens right by work, things are coming in Thursday-ish

Mr. Vocabulary
it was something that I only discovered years later and once i started using it was like WHAT THE FUCK THIS IS WHY MY EYE MAKEUP LOOKS LIKE TRASH

мαи∂α
LMFAO

Mr. Vocabulary
it often doesn't get mentioned, that and setting spray, and it's CRIMINAL

LOVE☆STRUCK
yeah i'm always on that BUDGE and honestly most of my makeup is super old but

мαи∂α
this is why I made this plurk, man

LOVE☆STRUCK
you can really get the most out of it with primer

LOVE☆STRUCK
the best primer i've ever used was makeover essentials, though

❝marti❞
I don't use foundation! I use a powder

мαи∂α
man, I'm excited

❝marti❞
And actually I just had to buy a new one because the powder I had before had been purchased in August

LOVE☆STRUCK
Face Primer | Makeover Essentials
this is the expensive, biggest-bottle version of it, but i got the smaller size with a collection deal (hence why i haven't bought it since)

❝marti❞
So it was like 3 shades tanner than it needed to be

LOVE☆STRUCK
ebay has the smaller bottles for $11

мαи∂α
okay, do I need a face primer too in addition to eye primer and foundation

LOVE☆STRUCK
but you only need like A TOUCH of it and makes your skin super smooth and like DRINKS that makeup in

LOVE☆STRUCK
some face primers work as both!

LOVE☆STRUCK
but eye primers are usually much stickier

LOVE☆STRUCK
and so you wouldn't want to use something specifically labelled as an eye primer on your cheeks

мαи∂α
yeah, for sure

LOVE☆STRUCK
but the other way around is usually fine, i used that one i linked for eyes since I don't use foundation except for drag

Mr. Vocabulary
yeah face primers are hit or miss for me

Mr. Vocabulary
if you're talking basic essentials, I never ever apply eye makeup without an eye primer or thick concealer of some kind

Mr. Vocabulary
I'll frequently apply face makeup without face primer

мαи∂α
okay, I think I'll start with eye primer first then see where this journey takes me

LOVE☆STRUCK
i think most blushes work just fine without a face primer, too

LOVE☆STRUCK
esp when you're looking for just a natural "im not dead" look

мαи∂α
eye primer and setting spray are on my to get list now

Mr. Vocabulary
the setting spray does 80% of the work of the face primer imho

Mr. Vocabulary
setting spray is what makes the difference between "I look like trash" and "this looks ok" 5 hours later

мαи∂α
I will likely update on plurk once I get everything in and start a makeup journey

мαи∂α
currently don't have major plans for the weekend, so I could play with it then

Mr. Vocabulary
yes please do!!

Mr. Vocabulary
when i was learning makeup I did it every morning and wiped it off if I didn't like it, but i only did one try a day because doing it too many times REALLY irritates your face and all the makeup remover makes it hard to apply makeup again

Mr. Vocabulary
needless to say, I wiped it off most days for quite a while LMAO

мαи∂α
that's gonna be me LMAO

мαи∂α
we'll see if I end up doing it on weekdays, I got to drag my ass out of bed earlier to do it

Mr. Vocabulary
you get faster as you learn what works, for sure

LOVE☆STRUCK
i have a friend who sleeps like the dead without moving and somehow, she's able to put her makeup on before bed, sleep with it on, and then just go out the door

LOVE☆STRUCK
and then does her skin care/face cleaning after she's done for work

LOVE☆STRUCK
i don't know what planet she summoned that ability from

мαи∂α
wtf

мαи∂α
I don't have that super power, but I'll work with what I got

LOVE☆STRUCK
it's incredible
