[School] My teachers are as a general rule not quite on board with my use of the singular 'they'.
sentient gate
I find many don't seem to be. I've taken to going by "ye" in Ireland since it's the colloquial form of "you" lol
sentient gate
not exactly the same, but seems to throw them off a little less

Why not?
Toss
I'm not sure they understand that it's even a thing?
Toss
Not all of them, anyway.
Toss
Which confuses me bc they're all supposed to be English scholars.
Toss
I got comments on this one report I wrote today and he underlined every time I used the singular 'they' and seemed confused that I didn't actually mean there were several people.
Toss
I just wanted to omit gender from it for anonymity.
𝔂𝓾𝓶𝓲
How .... old are they?
𝔂𝓾𝓶𝓲
Omg. I have used singular they in uni stuff before and everyone got it
𝔂𝓾𝓶𝓲
maybe one could add a footnote when using it first ... with an explanation?
doesn't help with your personal usage tho
Toss
No idea how old he is.
Toss
But everyone's always saying that he's so intelligent and knowledgeable so I'm surprised he didn't seem to catch it.
𝔂𝓾𝓶𝓲
... well maybe he doesn't quite live up to his reputation
Toss
I feel like that's a bit extreme lmao.
𝔂𝓾𝓶𝓲
the footnote or the reputation? xD
Toss
The reputation.

modern English says they = plural, that's what "scholars" all use. you could try using "one"? since it's gender neutral and viewed as "correct"
Toss
Mmmm I don't feel like that works in the same context.
Toss
But yeah maybe.
ATH ◈ URIA
Modern English def still uses singular they even in a scholar context, there's just a loud contingent of prescriptivists who insist it's Wrong but honestly prescriptivists will insist a lot of things are wrong
ATH ◈ URIA
The APA recently affirmed use of singular they in academic texts if u'd like a concrete backing for its acceptability.
Toss
Excellent ty.
Toss
No one has outright protested it tbh. This teacher just seemed genuinely confused.
ATH ◈ URIA
Are they ESL academic scholars? Like, swedish folks who studied english rather than english natives who studied english
ʟᴇɢᴀʟʟʏ sᴏᴜᴘ
Even Shakespeare and Chaucer used the singular they.
𝔂𝓾𝓶𝓲
I am very sure I have read more than a few scientific texts that have used it
Toss
Oh, yes, he's ESL. So there's that.
Toss
Hence me thinking it's genuine confusion.
Toss
Not Swedish tho.
ATH ◈ URIA
YEAH I was thinking if he's ESL and had no reason to look up singular they usage, he might've just been thrown be the vocal pushback to it as being correct
