cotton can work too. you only want to separate the nail corner from the nail bed so that it doesn't push into the flesh. so your aim is to raise the corner out.

and then don't cut your nails too short afterward so the corner stays outside

I struggled with ingrown nail on my big toe for more than 10 years, from high school to when I started working. It was worst when I was in high school: doctor had to remove excess, inflamed skin and I had to apply silver nitrate on it for months, then for almost a year I only wore sandals to school, was excused from PE.

The cotton thing between the nail and the nail bed worked for me, plus when I started to work I sought pedicure experts
