[st: picard] That first episode is so good, guys. I'm gonna do some spoilees.
kickero.
oh no its time
Masa
it is time
Masa
First of all, it just blends the aftermath of all the post-TNG stuff so well together.
Masa
Like top of the list is the stuff with Romulus that causes the Kelvin timeline to split off. It's here and it really matters. I think it's brilliant that something that seemed like kind of an afterthought to create the Abrams film is used here to have had such a huge impact on Picard's life.
Masa
The show begins with Picard playing cards which is a great send up to how TNG ended as well. All Good Things indeed...
Masa
They do a great job giving us a recap of prior events by putting Picard in an interview that highlights why he left Starfleet. A great showcase of just how good of an actor Patrick Stewart is.
Masa
It's refreshing to see someone return to a role they loved and just act the pants off of it.
Masa
The bits with Data look good. He doesn't look as ageless as an android should, but they did a very good job making Brent Spiner look young. I imagine the fact Data is already caked in makeup aids in this.
Masa
As for the younger cast... the two Romulans living with Picard threw me off at first, because I was like "these vulcans aren't as emotionless as they're supposed to"...
Masa
But kudos to Picard. The dude is sharing his chateau with two refugees. I'm sure we'll get to learn more about their relationship later on.
Masa
The mystery box girl is fine. Most people speculated she was either a borg or an android. I was leaning towards the latter that she was Lal 2.0... and I was right. What's really cool is that apparently Maddox is behind it. Like that there is just... detail. That dude only made two appearances in TNG, but it just makes sense that it would have to be him.
Masa
We meet a scientist lady who I think is going to be part of the main cast. She seems fine. We only interact with her a bit. She's cool, she's fine.
Masa
They didn't show any other Star Trek alumni this episode besides Picard and Data, which seems appropriate. This story is very much about these two. The episode also quickly lays to rest what became of B4 as well after Nemesis.
Masa
And since Nemesis is Picard's last appearance before this, it just ties it all together really well. Like, that movie was fine. But it's a great puzzle piece that builds up to this version of the Federation.
Masa
It just feels good to be back in this era again after being stuck in the pre-TOS era for so long. I like Discovery and I like the Abrams films, but it feels good to just be home again.
Spooky Thoughts
This is really reassuring to hear -- I haven't seen it yet but I have been very wary since TNG was my favourite Star Trek era
Masa
Yeah, I'm pretty happy with it. I mean, the tone is very different. It's a bit more grounded and it's very personal compared to TNG, but that's what it's supposed to be.
Masa
It's not trying to emulate the feel of TNG at all in the same way Orville is, but it's also not radically reinventing things the way Discovery does. It feels very familiar, but not in a pandering way.

What about Data though?
𝕁υѕт мєℓσ∂ιє
Is he real or just a dream?
Masa
So far, just a dream.
Masa
The attempt to upload himself into B4 did not succeed.
𝕁υѕт мєℓσ∂ιє
Awww
Masa
One thing left unaddressed is... what about Lore? He's supposed to be in tact. They didn't address what became of him.
Dalrint
...Is it worth getting cbs all access for?
Masa
That's entirely up to you.
𝕁υѕт мєℓσ∂ιє
If they remembered Maddox, I'm sure they remembered Lore
𝕁υѕт мєℓσ∂ιє
It'll prob be a plot point
Masa
Yeah. Honestly if they find a way to recover Data's 'essence', Lore's body is the perfect thing to drop it into. Which would be pretty fucked up since Lore was sentient, but...
Dalrint
Just copy lore to a thumb drive
𝕁υѕт мєℓσ∂ιє
Put lore in a teddy bear
𝕁υѕт мєℓσ∂ιє
like that dark mirror episode

This I want to see
