I just realised I'm not sure what real political leadership and statesmanship would look like in the absence of the monsters currently steering ships of state. The rule of law has broken down.
At a guess, any of the opposition leaders would behave in line with long established standards. But that's not the new normal, and need some getting used to again.

The problem is that the people who enable these leaders like the fact that they violate every norm.

which means it's up to the rest of us to enforce civic discipline.
